Show WONDER IS DESCRIBED. Mining Damp Full of Salt Lako Interests Inter-ests Is Booming. The Mining and Scientific Press has the following fol-lowing to say regarding ho camp of Wondor. Xov., in which numerous Salt Latora hare extensive ex-tensive mining Interests : "Wondor, tho sccno of tho latest mining excitement In Nevada, Is sitnatod about twenty-two miles northoast of Fairview, thus making mak-ing it oighty milcR from tho noarost railroad ?omt. It may be reached clthor direct from 'alrrlew, or, as most prefer, by goln? to Weslgato, twolro miles diataut, whore there in plenty of wator, nnd thenco to Wonder, slztoon miles more. A stage leaves Falrview daily for tho camp, and makes tho trip in, about six hours, "Tho new camp is situated In the SlWor mountains, about four miles from the head of an old river chnnuol, and half way bo-tween bo-tween Chalk mountain and Horso crook. It is flanked on clthor side by high, rolling hills, which soem to ho loss broken than thoao surrounding sur-rounding Falrview. The tops aro covered with a sparso growth of timbor, which in-suros in-suros plenty of comparatively cheap fuel. There is onough mouutnin grass to feed burros. "Tho formation is typical of the dosert region, there boing the usual vast andcslte and rhyolita dikes, with quartz and Rpar stringers throughout. To tho south is an Irainonso body of liniottono of indefinite extent, ex-tent, cut by iron-stained porphyry. The outcrops, out-crops, in general, aro not particularly prominent. promi-nent. The camp was discovered during Ilia early part of Juno. KRiixational surface oro having boon obtained from the Wonder claim. Tho nows immediately brought a rush of men from Falrview, nearly depopulating It temporarily, tem-porarily, and all surrounding ground was staked off for miles. Several new Btrikes woro made, but nothing approaching In richness rich-ness tho original location. "Tho surfaco oro is extremely rich in chlorido of silver, with accompanviug sulphides sul-phides and bromides. Gold is also associated asso-ciated with it Assays runing from $247 to ?D00 wero obthlnod from thu float. At Chalk mountain, ten miles distant, there aro bodies of silver-beuring catena, and with further dorclopuiont similar Or may ho found at Wondor. "At present tho camp consists of nbout 60 to SO tentt, no wooden buildings having buon as yet erected, though sovcral aro about to bo. Bosido work on tho Wonder claim, thoro Is much prospoctlng going on in tho ' surrounding sur-rounding hills, and several rich finds aro re-portod. re-portod. especially near Horne crook. Just now the camp is laboring under severe handicaps, han-dicaps, the worst bcin? lack of water. All water is hauled from Westgate, and lias a ready salo at SO per barrel. However, u new strike of water hes been made threo miles away, and thoro is orory indication that a good supply will soon be secured. Prices of all commodities arc high, but no higher than tho conditions warrant. Meals of dubious quality may bo had at 75 cents. Town lots am closoly held, prloes ranging from 150 to 5400 ia tho contor of the town, "Wonder is emphatically not 'a poor man's camp.' All goods must bo hauled in, and oro hauled ont, to Haien, and as tho roads are in sandy soil, with froquent steep fades, frolght rates are as high as 3 to cents per pound. Bui theso difficulties can be overcomo, and with nn intelligent management man-agement of capital Invested, Wonder should justify the god opinion already formed by conservative mining men who hove visited the camp." |
