ACCIDENT CAUSED BY MISTAKE IN THE ORDERS Engineer and Fireman Perish; Most of the Victims Negro Passengers. CHARLOTTE, N. C, July 23. Seaboard Sea-board Air Line passenger train No, 44? collided with an extra freight train a few miles west of namlot today, and from eighteen to twenty-five people aro reported to have boon "killed. The dead and injured wore taken to Rockingham. Details aro yet lacking. Tho wreck occurred at :30 ono milo west of Hamlet. Tho Seaboard Air Lino passenger No. 44 collided head-on with an extra freight. Engineer F. B. Lomis of Hnnilct, Fireman Tom Hill and from eighteen to twonty-fivo pas-sengors, pas-sengors, most of thorn negroes, wero killod. Dead Not Identified. A score or moro wero injured. Onlv a few of the dead havo been identified. Tho dead and injured were taken to Rockingham as soon as a special train could be made up. The wreck was caused by a misunderstanding misun-derstanding of orders. Both engines and nearly all the couches and box cars wero demolished. Traffic is completely blooked. Taking Out the Victims. NORFOLK, Va., July 23. O. Train 44 is a through train, northbound, north-bound, from Florida to Now York, passing pass-ing through Hamlet, which is a junction junc-tion point. |
