The executive ex-ecutive council of tho American Federation Fed-eration of Labor today mado good its declaration of several measures to enter the field of politics in the interest of trades union movement and to urge all friends of organized, labor to elect to political offices men known to be fa-vorablo fa-vorablo to labor's cause. At the headquarters head-quarters of tho federation the council today issued its "campaign programme," pro-gramme," addressed "to all organized organ-ized labor "and frionds in tho United States." It sets out that tho trades union movement hns kept and proposes to keep pace with tho rapid change in industrial in-dustrial affairs, and that tho working people cannot hope to maintain their rights or a progressive position in the varying phases of modern society unless un-less they organize and exercise all those functions which, ns workmon and citizens, citi-zens, it is thoir privilege and their duty to exercise. Demands Equal Eights. It is declared thnt labor makes no demand on Government and society which is not oqually accorded to all the people of this country and thnt "it can and will be satisfied with nothing less." The proposed campaign is based upon tho allegation that little attention has been paid to tho enactment of laws pro-parod pro-parod by organized labor and presented to Congress, for reliof of those wrongs and the attainment of tho rights to which labor and th9 common people are justly entitled, and which aro essentially es-sentially necessary for their welfare. The council issues a word of wnrning that the movement must not degenerate into a scramble for office, but that it should bo a determined effort, free absolutely abso-lutely from all partisanship of every name and character to secure tho legislation leg-islation we deem necessary and essential to the welfare and happines of all our people. It is expressly urged that if a Congressman Con-gressman or State Legislator has proven himself a true friend to tho right of labor, ho Bhould be supported and no candidate nominated against him. |
