Show GooiTkings to Dp Editor Tribune. As I read the signs of the times. It would seem, in view of the. approaching Mormon Conference in Salt Lake, and the precarious condition con-dition of Senator Smoot's seat, that It would be exceedingly appropriate for the Mormon fraternity and hierarchy to do these two thlnus. 1. A unanimously voted resolution in favor of an amendment to the National Na-tional Constitution forbidding polygamy polyg-amy and polygamous cohabitation, nnd giving Congress power to secure enforcement en-forcement by appropriate legislation. s This would express a purpose to abandon the crime still practiced by so many lending Mormons In the name of religion. It would place the Mormon church In a different attitude. Senator Smoot could advocate such an ujnend-mont. ujnend-mont. Such a resolution, ns above said, would be rend with delight, printed in the columns of The Tribune as a part of the doings of the Conference Confer-ence ot hand and chow that under your faithful preaching ngaliuu crime, some "fruit meet for repentance" is being brought forth Mormon opinion as to polygamy Is not the standard of whnt constitutes crime. It Js time for Mormons to authoritatively abandon hope of legalizing polygamy. The State and nation gave-ln. the verdict long ago, against the barbarism of slavery and polygamy. 2. Let the Mormon leaders and church read from tho pages of the hook of God's Providence In this twentieth twen-tieth Christian century this feet, as plainly written there as anything they can read In the Book of Mormon: There are ns good saints, to say the least, In the other churches of our1 land, as In the Mormon. Now If It be said the Mormon leaders lead-ers will not do the first thlngmentloned, very well Then the best portion of the American nation will continue to have the same opinion of Joseph F. Smith that It has had since his testimony testi-mony In Washington. And ns its ohlef representative he will continue to give chnraeter to the Mormon church; handicapping han-dicapping Its every missionary, and sending its polygamous stench through Christendom; and should excludo Mr. Smoot from the Senate, as matters stand. If It be said the second thing mentioned will not be done because the Mormon church Is exclusive In Us claim to be the only true church, nnd Is In Its attitude and teaching the monopolist mo-nopolist of spiritual salvation, those who accept the Deseret .News as their political Bible and spiritual Instructor may contii.ue to sustain such stupendous stupen-dous claims. But the most liberal and Intelligent Morrpons aro not going to do so. They know better. They know that "the tree Is known by Its fruit." And they know that the fruits of faith, hope and love, and spiritual salvation sal-vation for time and eternity, nre found in the hearts and lives of a great host of Christians who are not Mormons. Mor-mons. They know when they stfe It the charm In the beauty of a living faith- They know that a righteous life Is better than fits and visions, and hlerarchs, hle-rarchs, and leaders, disobedient to Important Im-portant and righteous laws of tho State.
