Show GOOD SUGGESTIONS. An "American Christian." whoso letter let-ter is printed In this Issue of The Tribune, Trib-une, wants the Mormon church, at is ensuing conference, to advocate a constitutional con-stitutional amendment against polygamy. polyg-amy. The suggestion Is a good one, but will go unheeded by the hlerarchs. Some years ago, when the constitutional constitu-tional amendment was under consideration consider-ation by Congress, the late President Lorenzo Snow was urged to take an outspoken attitude In favor of the measure. He was warned that opposition opposi-tion by the Mormon church would be accepted by the country as sufficient , proof of continued favor for polygamy by the church. Assuming that he and his colleagues weru 3lncere he was asked to demonstrate that sincerity by asking that Jurisdiction over the Inhibited In-hibited practice be placed in the federal fed-eral government. Under the advice of certain minor hlerarchs, still living In polygamy, President Snow refused. The excuse which they gave to him and which he repeated was this; "While no more polygamous marriages are being solemnized sol-emnized within the church, yet here and there is some old man living with mor9 than one wife, and we do not want to see him hounded to IiIb grave by tret deputies marshal and the district dis-trict attorneys of the United States. We remember the old painful tlmo of the raid and we do not wish to see such things repeated." Subsequent events have demonstrated that this solicitude for old and decrepit men (who are still vigorous enough, according to the silly argument) was reallv an anxiety In '.behalf of younger and robust men who had, not yet sccurod nil the wives the wanted. And the prediction has come true. Opposition by the Mormon church to the constitutional amendment Is proof incontrovertible that the Mormon "church still favoru polygamy and does not desire to repress tho practice. As to the second suggestion of "American Christian" that tho Mormon church shall liberalize Itself and read in the decrees of Providence toward all humanity hu-manity that other churches and other peoples are ns good as the Mormon organization. or-ganization. It can only become effective when Joseph F. Smith shall resign his present place of power. He lives as an autocrat by teaching to his people that they are the best In the world nnd lhat he is the best of the best. Once admit that other human creatures may be as good, and all reason for having a prophet, seer and revelator disappears. If Christiana may be saved through Christ without the mediation of an earthly Intercessor and dictator, tho tithe grafter's occupp-tlon Is gone. As a mer3 abstract suggestion "American Christian" has made a contribution con-tribution of value. But If the Mormon church were to apply these doctrines thor? would bs twenty-fix vacancies in the hierarchy-boiildes there would be some yawning spaces In the manly hearts of pcrysramlstrs whose souls beat for several. |
