Show TILLMAN NOT SUITED Court Review Amendment of Rata Bill Hot Satisfactory. WASHINGTON. April 2. Senator Tillman, Till-man, who has charge of the. rate bill In the Senate, said last night he was not satisfied sat-isfied with the court review amondment measure which was agreed on yesterday between President Roosevelt, several Re- Eubllcan Senators who are supporting the 111 and members of the Interstate Commerce Com-merce commission. He said he would oppose op-pose it on the floor of the Senate, and he expressed the opinion that not half a dozen of his Democratic colleagues would support tho amendment. Does Not Meet Situation. Senator Tillman declares the amendment amend-ment does not meet the situation fully Inasmuch In-asmuch as it makes no provision setting forth practically that there shall be no suspension of the railway rate fixed by the Interstate Commerce commission pending the Judicial determination of any case which may be appealed from the rate established. This Is a contention which Senator Tillman and a number of Democratic Senators have urged, as they argue that a failure to provldo absolutely absolute-ly against a suspension of the rate on-eratee on-eratee to nullify the objects for which the legislation Is desired. The Senator added that he would prefer to vote for the House bill as It stood than to accept the amendment, for tho pending measure gave the right of review where constitutional constitu-tional questions are Involved. The proposed -amendment was dlscussod generally today among groups of Democratic Demo-cratic Senators, butthere wag no conference con-ference on tho subject among thent Senator Spooner was at tho White House last night in conference with President Presi-dent Roosevelt, presumably on maltor.s connected with rate legislation. |
