Show THE ELITE CLASS. The special correspondent of the Rocky-Mountain News of Denver, writing- from Washington, says that Smoot's rebuttal testimony Instead of being an y.id to the apostle-Senator, Is in reality a reinforcement of the prosecution. prose-cution. Mr. C. S. Goldby, the special writer for the News, shrewdly takes the evidence evi-dence of President Llnford of the Brlgham Young College of Logan and demonstrates from It that the hierarchy hie-rarchy Is thoroughly Impregnated with the polygamous Idea. Mr. Llnford's affirmation af-firmation that he still believes In polygamy, po-lygamy, is the particular point seized by the writer for the News. To the evidence afforded by Smoot's own witnesses moy be added the unimpeachable un-impeachable testimony of well known events In this State From Joseph F. Smith, the president, to Mr. Buckholt of Provo, a minor priest, the men who are in polygamy or who desire to enter en-ter it are the chief care of the church. They are protected in every possible way; they are honored by exalted office In church and State; their fame Is guarded from public criticism as are their crimes from public ounlshment. And the Mormon who would speak against them or against the doctrine of polygamy would probably be placed on trial for fellowship and excommunicated excommuni-cated from Ui2 church for "drunkenness "drunken-ness and other crimes," to quote the post-mortem charge of the Deseret News in such case3. |
