They sparred for sorrio time, l apparently sizing each other up. Finally they went to close quarters, without damage. dam-age. Corbett rushed In viciously but missed rJuht and left for the body. Nelson Nel-son shot his left lightly to tho face and In a mix sent right to Corbott's body. Corbett then swung his rlRht to iho head heavily and the bell found them In a fruitless mix-up. Nd blows of consequence were landed In this round. Corbett was cool while Nelson was a trifle anxious. Round 2, After some sparring both ir.lssod lefts and thoy went to cloffo quarter.". quar-ter.". Nelson getting In left lightly to Corbett's face, and ducking a vicious right upporcut. Corbott rushed to a clinch and soinc vicious in-flghtlng followed. fol-lowed. Nelson placed aomo good lefts on Corbett's body and a right to the Jaw. Nelson was short with straight left. Corbett Cor-bett rushed, feinted with left and drove his right hard to Nelson's head. A similar simi-lar blow went wild and they again went to closo quarters, mixing It without damage. dam-age. Quick as a flash Corbett hooked his right to the Jaw and Nelson retaliated retali-ated In kind with right to tho face. Corbett Cor-bett then changed his tactics and tried straight lefts for tho Jaw. Out of five attempts, two wero successful. Corbett wan bleeding slightly from the mouth as tho gong rang, and the men went to tholr corners. Virtually tho honors woro even. Round 3 They went to tho ccntor and exchanged lefts to tho head. Corbctt then swung a vicious right to tho head and Nelson retaliated with a left upper-cut upper-cut to the Jaw. Nelson rushed Corbott to tho ropes, landing loft and right on tho cx-champlon. As thoy squared off Nelson sent a straight right to the Jaw nnd followed It with left swings to tho fnee, making Corbott wince. Nelson forced Corbctt to a neutral corner, but tho latter got clear and they fought to the centor of tho ring at close quarters, Corbott landing several punches on the face. Corbett suddenly sent two terrific rights to Nelson's Jaw, and they mixed it fiercely. Nelson then forced Corbott around tho ring, but received straight right to the face. Corbett swung a fearful fear-ful right to the face as the gong rang. The pace In this round was fast. Whllo Nelson landed more frequently, Corbett's blows had tho strm behind them and ho succeeded In evening up the honors. Round 1. Nolson swung left to the head and Corbctt missed a fearful right uppcrcut up-pcrcut for tho Jaw. They went to closo quarters and Corbett missed two short arm Bwlncs for tho Jaw. Nelson forced Corbctt against tho ropos and then around tho ring, landing almost at will on Corbett's head and fnco. Corbett stalled and then In some heavy ln-flght-Ing Corbott put right and left to the face nnd body. They fought shoulder to shoulder, both missing fierce right and left uppcrcuts Nolson landed left and right swings to tho Jaw, but Corbel t stinlghtcned Nolson out with straight right to the Jaw Corbctt followed It with right nnd left swings, as the bell rang, which made Nelson groggy, lie was a bit unsteady na ho went to Ills corner. Another right found a resting place on Corbott's mouth. At' this stage Corbctt got ln a wicked right to the Jaw. but Nelson gavo two for ono and planted left and right on Corbett'a face. Corbett fought back hard, but was met with a right swing to tho Jaw and n left straight to the face. Nolson kept up tho bombardment, finally flooring Corbott with a wicked right swing to tho Jaw. Nelson had Corbett groggy, forcing him against the ropes, with blood streaming from his mouth and nose and presenting a sorry spectacle. Corbctt was weak and alriiost tottered to his corner as the gong clangod. It was Nelson's round by a wldo margin. Round S They went to ciose quarters at tho outset. Nolson missed several lefts for the face. Nelson thon sent right to tho face nnd Corbett stalled desperately. desper-ately. Corbott's l'aco soon broke out bleeding afresh. Corbett kept in close, missed several desperato swings and was then forced Into Nelson's corner. Nolson pegging away mercilessly at his face. Corbett Cor-bett drove a wicked right to Nolson's face but the latter handed out a crushing right that caught Corbett on tho jaw. Tho fighting hero waa most desperate. Corbctt Cor-bctt fought wildly, while Nelson made his blows tell, seldom falling to land. Ho upper-cut Corbett vlclouBly several times with right and brought more blood from Corbett'B faco. Just before the gong rang Corbctt landed a fearful right swing to Nelson's Jaw. but there was no perceptlblo effect on the Battling Demon. Neloon's round. Round 0. Corbott complained to tho refcreo that Nelson was butting him with his head, hut no attention was paid to tho claim. His swings wero wild, however. Nelson again rushed Corbett to tho ropes, landing at will with right and left on the face. Corbett was CTOggy and tho crowd yelled to "Stop It! Stop It!" Nelson went aftor Corbett, who could scarcely raise hla. hands. Corbett's seconds, seeing tho holplcps condition of their man, threw up the spongo as a token of defeat Corbett was carried to his corner with blood streaming stream-ing from his nostrils, mouth and ears, an utterly dofeatd pugilist. Nolson left tho ring with scarcely a mark to show that he had been In a fight. |
