Show CITY T IF."'. Wuh an eiToit wo are able to reach those resolutions handed in so late on Monday night. They were parsed by an "indignation" meeting, and we should say the meeting which adopted them ouht to have been indignant, in fact sligluJy mad; but firat read them: Whereas, it is right and proper that all public officers should be held to a strict accountability of their stewardship, steward-ship, and Whereas, equity, justice, common law and statute law make it the duty of the officers of Salt Lake city to make a public exhibit oi" all receipts and ex-1 ex-1 penditure?, and Whereas, no such exhibit as is con-i con-i templated by law has ever been made ! since the organization of the city, and Whereas, we recognize the right oJ i the city authorities to collect revenue j for city purposes, and it is not our dc .'ire to resist that authority when locally exercised, yet, being determined that tho law providing for exhibits of the city finances shall henceforth be complied with; therefore be it Resolved That until a proper exhibit i be made of the receipts and expenditures expendi-tures of the city for the four years last past, that is during the incumbency of the present mayor, wo, a portion of the tax i payers of this city, will refuse to pay any more taxes or licenses to the city authorities; and be it further Resolved, That we will combine and share pro rata, as per amount of our taxes and licenses for ihe cum nt year, , the necessary expenses of resisting any legal proceedings that may be commenced com-menced agaiiwt any of our number for the collection of any taxes or licenses until such exhibit is made. Kesolved, That this preamble and; these resolutions be signed by the pres ident and secretary of this meeting, and that they send copies of the same to tho mayor and city council, and also to tho Tribune and Herald of this city. Alex. Bocers, Secretary. A. S. Gould, President. Wc admire consistency and truth and modesty, and all that kind of thing, and that is why we admire the above. No doubt Mr. Gould from California, or wherever business required re-quired his presence, was watching matters in Salt Lake ever "since the organization of this city,", with teen, close-searching eye; and Jlr, Rodgers evidently wi'h the other eyo kept track of everything from amid the mists and heather of Scotland for the same period. The above preamble and resolutions rest on the following as on a pivot : No such exhibit as is contemplated by law has over been made since the organization of this city. Destroy that little pivot and the whole thing is gone. Now, with regard re-gard to that statement, some discourteous discour-teous and impolite people might ap-ly ap-ly an ugly-sounding little word to it, but wo will simply say, it is untrue. The published statements for each quarter sinco the city charter was passed can bo shown to any anxious iuquircr; and the city treasurer's books arc open, and have been all the time, for the inspection of any and every tax-payer. It seems a pity almost to spoil so nice a set of resolutions this way, especially as these peopie had made up their minds anyhow not to pay taxes and to tight the city, and they had to get up something of this kind. With the aid of a kindly disposed judiciary which has the most righteous desire to sec that nobody but .Mormons shall be required to honor the law, they hope for success; and probably may attain ii! Who knows! Wc may refer to them sometime again. |
