Show AMERICAN RAILS IN INDIA The Boston Pest says that the Maryland Mary-land Steel company is about to ship its first consignment on a contract with the Indian government of 8000 tons of j steel rails to be used in building a railroad in British India It says that I the same company is also sending rails to England itself to Australia and to I Mexico that the Illinois Steel company has sent some 20000 tons to Japan and I that the Carnegie company also sends rails to continental countries There are two interesting points in connection with this extension of the market for American iron and steel I says the Post In the first place it follows so closely upon the breaking up of the steel rail trust that we may reasonably rea-sonably connect the two incidents as cause and effect And In the next place this trade is one which the Republican tariff makers found it necessary to protect by the imposition of a duty on the imported product This is an object lesson Why should not American citizens have the advantage advan-tage of the same low prices for steel i rails which our manufacturers make to 1 East Indians and Chinese and other foreigners in their successful competition competi-tion with British ironmasters And why should not other trusts follow the I example of the steel rail trust dissolve and push their business on regular j lines i Perhaps other trusts will follow the j eample of the steel rail trust in time I I I ana dissolve the government will never I foe them and perhaps in some far disivnt future Americans will be permitted I per-mitted to buy in what market they I pleas without paying tribute under the I guise o protection to combinations at home |
