Show LILIOUXALANIS CASE When the Hawaiian islands become part of the United States as they almost al-most certainly will the position of ex Queen LilloukalanI will be no different from what it is now She will not I lose a kingdom for that she lost some years ago in fact in no sense will she be injured No doubt she has been hoping all the time since her deposition deposi-tion that there would be some turn In the affairs of the islands that would restore her to her throne There was no such possibility and all the while she was hoping against hope The annexation an-nexation of the islands cannot but convince her that whatever her hopes in this respect may have been they were but dreams In the first annexation treaty which was negotiated under General Harri sons administration and withdrawn from the senate so soon as Mr Cleveland Cleve-land came into power there was a provision pro-vision for paying the exqueen an annuity an-nuity There is no such provision in the present treaty and it is proper there should be none The provision was substantially an acknowledgement acknowledge-ment by this government of a partial responsibility for the revolution which deprived LilioukalanI of a throne and kingdom Whatever may be the facts I in the case and however improperly marines from American warships may have been landed In Honolulu and rendered the revolutionists moral support sup-port if not actual assistance this government gov-ernment could not acknowledge that it had aided the revolution It would be to place a stigma upon its own name In the negotiations for the annexation annexa-tion of Hawaii the United States have only known the republic of Hawaii while Lilioukalani has been an unknown un-known person having no official existence exist-ence whatever for this government To I completely ignore her was the only j thing the administration could do She I is deserving of very much from the American people but that sympathy I can take no form of recognition of her in an official document as having any j sovereign rights in Hawaii Her case I is closed |
