Show tl RECOGNITION FOR OARLISLE Just how wide is the gulf between Secretary Carlisle and the Democratic party js shown by the attitude of the Iowa State Register a stalwart Republican Re-publican paper towards him It says It should be plainly apparent to all intelligent people that the sound money Democrats elected McKinley and Hobart for they would not and could not have been elected if those patriotic Democrats had not turned I from their party and loyally aided in preserving the national honor the integrity of the people the purity of the chief court and all the constitu I tional methods preserving peace and I order The Register has frequently been charged with extreme partisanship partisan-ship but it stands firmly for giving suitable and honoring recognition to the soundmoney Democrats who so I loyally made last weeks victory certain I cer-tain and overwhelming and will still more patriotically aid in maintaining it if given suitable positions of responsibility respon-sibility for carrying the triumph into permanent effect Secretary Carlisle has nobly represented repre-sented the chief principles for which the soundmoney Democrats contended in this years campaign He is able efficient and trustworthy and the patriotic pa-triotic manner in which he banished all his lifes political prejudices to stand for safe and progressive government govern-ment has given him the confidence of all the intelligent people Why not continue Secretary Carr Car-r lisles services in the treasury department depart-ment for another four years and thus give recognition that would aid in holding all the soundmoney forces to gether and make certain that the victory vic-tory so gloriously won will be maintained main-tained The soundmoney Democrats are not asking for official recognition but their great aid should be acknowledged acknowl-edged and there is no other way by which it can be so appropriately and effectually recognized as in tendering the secretary of the treasuryship to Secretary Carlisle It is not at all likely that President elect McKinley or his advisers will take any heed of this suggestion though there is much merit in it from the Registers point of view Secretary Carlisle gave the Republican Repub-lican party very material aid His bondIssuing policy to maintain the gold reserve had the hearty approval of all Republican financial authorities Mr Clevelands recognition of the late Judge Gresham is sufficient precedent pre-cedent for the retention by the incoming in-coming administration of Secretary Carlisle as the head of the treasury department Let him be retained |
