Show TECtlPEHLVXCE UNION CONVENTION Morning Session Devoted to Discuss lug ivn Amendment St Louis Nov 16The delegates to the twentythird annual convention of W C T U reassembled this morning i I The proceedings began with prayer by S I Mrs Palmer of Iowa A number of 1 suggestions for the advancement of the I I work of temperance crusading were re I celved and referred to appropriate com 1 mlttees The committee on financial I i scheme recommended this plan for se i curing funds pursued last year be continued i con-tinued I The first animated debate began this I morning when Mrs Lovell of Pennsylvania j Penn-sylvania proposed an amendment to I the constitution whereby state super I I intendents may be added to the executive 1 execu-tive committee The committee as now I constituted is composed of the state presidents and the proposed constitutional I constitu-tional amendment has been rejected at the last three conventions The entire morning session was occupied in the debate The vote resulted in 159 for the I amendment and 135 against A two I i thirds majority was needed to carry i the amendment which was lost I At the afternoon session Mrs Sophia 1 Grubb of Missouri superintendent of the work among foreigners reported that it was progressing favorably although al-though influenced by the general depression de-pression in business The seven national na-tional associates had done effective i work Mrs M B Carse president of the 1 Publishing association reported that i the receipts were 145337 and the expenditures ex-penditures 125151 The recoils f > r 1896 were 14462 less than in 1S93 but the net gain was 5516 The financial storm had been weathered by reducing expenses the volume of business he lag smaller Mrs Carse also submitted a report about the temple She had raised 141398 of the 300000 needed to buy the trust bonds and would try to secure the balance this year The interest in-terest on the bonds had been paid The states subscribing over 1000 were Illinois 4274 New York 2272 Massachusetts 25S1 Pennsylvania 2277 Ohio 2237 Michigan 1557 Connecticut 1313 Maryland 1053 I Missouri 1040 |
