Show IXS AXGE1ES HARBOR Commission Appointed to Determine Its Location Washington Nov 16The commission com-mission authorized by the river and harbor bill for the purpose of determining determin-ing the location of the deepsea harbor in southern California met this morning morn-ing in the rooms of the lighthouse board The contest for years has been between Santa Monica and San Pedro The one an outer and the other an inner harbor for the port of Los Angeles Congress is to accept the report of this commission as final disposition of the question and in accordance with the recommendations of the commission the appropriation aggregating several millions of dollars will be made The personnel of the commission is conspicuous con-spicuous Rear Admiral Walker president presi-dent of the lighthouse board appointed by Secretary Nany Is chairman The other members are Assistant Superintendent Super-intendent Rogers detailed by the superintendent su-perintendent of the coast and geodetic survey William H Burr George Mor rison of New York and Richard P Morgan of Illinois appointed by the president The commission met for the first time this morning but did nothing noth-ing beyond discussing the subject informally in-formally and endeavoring to agree upon the method of proceeding with its work While no conclusion was reached it is quite certain that at an early day the body will go to California and give the subject the personal at tentipn demanded by the act of congress con-gress The details of the work and all conclusions reached by the board will be kept secret until a report is made to congress At the convenience of the president the commission will pay its respects to the chief executive It is believed that the major part of the work will be done on the soot as the civil engineers are anxious to begin work at once and conclude it at the earliest possible moment constetent with the magnitude of the undertaking |
