Minuet Re hearsal Last EveningA German Is t Be Given By the Cotillion Club On Friday Evening Social Notes As a pleasing invitation for new members to join the society the Young Mens Christian association gave a membership banquet at the association rooms last night Toasts were given by some of the eloQuent members and both the menu and the flowing wit were greatly enjoyed i Two banqueting tables were ar ranged in the reception room where covers were laid for 50 Dr Edward T Silver president of the association filled the role of toastmaster and interjected inter-jected vivacious sentences between the I i toasts Beside him were the directors and opposite sa Secretary John T Axton wrapped in his usual undisturbed tuibed urbanity 1Titll the conclusion of the menu Dr Silver arose with the irreproachable good humor which succeed such fuic tions to say that every one was no doubt awaiting with eagerness on football I foot-ball I was the custom however to present the religious side fist and so the first toast would be Sunday Meetings C H Parsons responded A great orator he began once said in reply to a question that he had spent 50 years in preparing his oration That of course meant that the conduct of I his life was fitting him for such an occasion So every day we are making up our lives and we will make them stronger and better by attending these weekly meetings Mr Parsons be lieved religion to be the most impor tant side of T M C A work and invited in-vited the directors to be Miesent each Sunday Thc Literary Department was the next toast to which B T Johnson responded re-sponded He wanted to see more con te ° t in the literary work but believed that the crowds who did attend this entertainment were better than those who went to basket and football j games After announcing a large reception for New Years day Dr Silver intro I duced F W Hnls one of the directors and expresident of the association at associaton 1 Omaha who spoke to Other Associa tions 1 think this association is the best I know he said What we might improve in is sociability In Omaha the sociability is fine Mr Hills wanted the membership increased and told some humorous stories The Football Team was responded to by Frank Pierce in the absence of Jerry Cross who had been billed to wax eloquent on his favorite pastime I dont know any hng pastme ball said Mr Pierce with rare frankness I frank-ness I am not like Mr Parsons > liom I understood to remark devoted 50 years to preparing his speech laughter but regarding football I I will say that the Y 11 C A should excel in that as in everything else Set ourselves on the rock of Jesus Christ and you are sure to attain a great manhood Rev Nutting spoke briefly in commendation com-mendation of the Y M C A as a help ann adjunct to the church The Gymnasium was the subject of a toast by Secretary Axton He had with great pleasure he said read in The Herald an article about the Y M C A being the greatest army in the world He then referred tulo gisticalij to the football team whereon he would like again to be a tackle if circumstances permitted Whenever we see a particuarlj husky boy we go after him in the interests of the team and in this way many new members have been added to the association The Y M C A has associaton a great work and brought happiness to many homes Frank Stephens spoke facetiously on The Contest and explained the pleasure he had had in witnessing the Thanksgiving football game The training here gives a man a harmonious harmoni-ous development We are glad to have recruits from anj church We can learn from the Mormons as from other churches I particularly admire Brig ham Youngs advice to his people to seek innocent amusement Mr Stephens explained that there were now 450 members and that the blues were ahead in the membership contest Professor Waltz responded to The Night School which he said was progressing admirably There were I now about 100 students The final toast was made by Councilman Coun-cilman elect Edgar Howe who expressed ex-pressed his intention of joining the association sociation at an early date I > 4 > < i > The last rehearsal of the minuet
