Show THE OFFICIAL COUNT I Of the Returns of the Recent School Election ONLY ONE DISCREPANCY I I GIVES AN IirCItEASE IN THE VOTE FOR HELDE1T I Critchlows Majority Over Symons In the First Ward Stands at FortyEight Big Majorities For All the Other Successful Candidates Candi-dates The board of education met pursuant to law yesterday noon to canvass the returns of the election held on Dec 1 in this city for members of the board whose tenures of office will commence Jan 1 In sharp contrast with the returns re-turns of the late municipal election the board found the work of its election judges surprisingly free from irregularities irregular-ities and imperfections Only one discrepancy dis-crepancy was found in the count By a mistransposition of figures the judges in the Fifth gave Nelden 915 whereas 951 was the total vote cast for him THE GOOD RESULTS STAND The canvass was quickly made and after the results were ascertained they were officially declared and certified toby to-by the members present The official count showed the entire mass convention conven-tion ticket which stands for the maintenance main-tenance of the free public school system sys-tem Including the high school at the high standard of excellence elected by overwhelming majorities although in the First Critchlows majority was only 43 In the Third and Fourth there was no opposition and the Second had only a small fraction of i adverse vote to contend against In the Fifth the large vote given to the mass convention nominees nom-inees was reaffirmed by the canvass RESULT OF THE CANVASS The result of the canvass Is detail is as follows FIRST WARD E W Wilson long term 2247 E B Critchlow short term1154 C W Symons short term 1106 Scattering 7 SECOND WARD Arnold G Giauque long term 941 W F Colton short term SG3 Scattering 129 THIRD WARD O W Moyle long term 350 W J Newman short term 351 Scattering 6 FOURTH WARD I Nat M Brigham long term 325 R W Young short term 331 Scattering S FIFTH WARD W A Nelden long term 951 J H Kelson long term 319 Charles Baldwin short term 816 Alex McMaster short term 454 METHOD OF PROCEDURE Eight members of the board were present the absentees being Bywater and Toronto The boards attorney Waldemar Van Cott was ready to give legal advice on the method of procedure pro-cedure which is provided for in chapter chap-ter V of the 1S07 election law Clerk Moreton announced that the sealed envelopes containing the official returns were duly received by him af ter the polls closed and had remained secure in his possession since midnight of the 1st inst Grant and Hansen two of the members mem-bers who have no personal interest in the result of the election were appointed j ap-pointed tellers to assist the clerk in the preliminary work of the canvass which was merely a verification of the poll books and tally sheets No check was j made of the returned official registers COMMENCED AT THE LAST The returnsfrom the Fifth precinct i were taken up first and canvassed The reverse numerical order was followed concluding with the returns from the First No check was attempted to be made of the returned official registers I until the First where the resultls close I as between Critchlow and Symons was I I reached when the president ruled that i fgc roe r er ie a verification of the number of names I marked voted to check with the poll book and the highest aggregate of votes counted on the tally sheet was unnecessary un-necessary The total vote by precincts or municipal mu-nicipal wards was as follows First 2257 Second 997 Third 356 Fourth 332 Fifth 1270 grand total for the city 5212 or less than 30 percent per-cent of the entire registered vote I DECLARATION AND CERTIFICATES CERTIFI-CATES A resolution by Mr Colton was adopted adop-ted declaring elected as members of the board of education the persons ascertained as-certained from the canvass of returns to have received the highest number of votes for the terms stated and directing direct-ing the president and clerk to Issue the required certificates of election to the ten memberselect |
