Above Saturdays Close Provisions Higher Chicago Dec GAt the opening and for a short time after wheat was in a weak condition Opening at S989 as compared with Saturdays closing price of 89J it sold off slowly under fairly liberal offerings to 88 Early news almost altogether favored sellers Liverpoo which opened 14d tower slowed Y d decline at 130 p m Worlds shipments were very large amounting to 9399000 bushels fully 750000 more than expected though all the increase was from America In the last 22 weeks America has furnished furnish-ed threefifths of all the wheat shipped by exporting countries The trade was also figuring on a visible increase of 500000 against a decrease of 2600000 last year The opening ewakness was added to by the liberal northwest receipts re-ceipts Minneapolis and Duluth reporting report-ing a total of 1315 cars against 1 440 last week and 1048 a year ago Chicago Chi-cago receipts were 257 cars After the market had dropped to 8Si however there was a quick rally on covering by shorts and the market went to tIM ilhout much effort I had been ei IHlL I that in case of a break below 89 a big line of long stuff would come out but in this the crowd was d cap pointed The isible s low ed a larger increase that expected aggregating 1 189000 bushels bringing the total stock to 310880000 A year ago they were 367170000 bushels But so firm was the market that even the excessive increase in-crease fell flat in so far a affecting prices was concerned The arrival here of 284000 bushels blake b-lake from Duluth 257 cars by rail and the reinspection of 79 cars from prIvate I to public elevators of contract grades did not dampen the ardor of the buyIng buy-Ing The amount on passage increased 1630000 bushels bringing the amount to 33 823 000 bushels A year ago it was 32960000 bushels At 12 clock May had sold as high as SO5 the market being be-ing helped a great deal by rallies at New York and St Louis The market I held steady at that price for some time became suddenly weak and then drcpped to SS This was due to the Orange Judd Farmer report which gave the area of winter wheat sown as 14 per cent larger than the crop harvested vested in 1897 although the condition of the plant was put at only 84 per cent There was an endeavor on the part of the early buyers to realize on nur chases but a lack of supporting orders either from outside or in rendered this difficult and the decline to 8S resulted result-ed Just at the close a effort was made to buy some December but 98 had to be paid a cent above Saturdays close May closed nervous at SS There was not much done in corn The market opened a shade lower with wheat but became steady after a further fur-ther slight decline and held well throughout the session The market for oats was a very narrow nar-row oe wth small offerings and equally restricted demand Provisions ruled strong and hIgher on t moderate amount of business Shorts were a little anxious about standing contracts and purchased to some extent Part of the advance was lost on selling by Cudahys brokers but the close was steady I The leading futures ranged as follows WHEATKo 2 i I Open I High I Low I Close Dec 9Hf9 195 94H 19G Jan
