Show AffAIS OP IE COOIII I SHEEP OWNERS ATTEMPT TO EVADE PAYING TAXES A Claim Sent I From Utah County George L Lee Appointed Justice Jus-tice For Bingham Precinct The county commissioners at their meeting yesterday devoted some attention atten-tion to sheep owners who are attempting attempt-ing to evade the payment of taxes on the woolly folds The subject was brought up by a communication from George Havercamp county clerk of Utah county demanding onehalf of county and school tax due for the ranging of transient sheep herds numbering 7000 head and valued at 10500 Four sheepmen from whom taxes are due are mentioned In the communication as follows Walter Davidson Salt Lake City 1600 sheep valued at 2400 C S Miller Murray 1800 head 2700 W F Williams Mil ler PO 1400 sheep 2100 R P Miller Mil-ler Murray 2200 sheep valued at 3300 I A letter from County Assessor Quinn was received by the board reporting that none of the herds mentioned had mentoned been assessed as two of the owners named had claimed that they had already al-ready paid taxes on the sheep in Utah county and the other two could not be I found in the county The communication communi-cation of Assessor Quinn was ordered sent to the clerk at Provo as a response to his request for taxes supposed to have been collected The resignation of G T Turnbow as justice of the peace of Bingham precinct pre-cinct was accepted by the board and George E Lee was appointed to fill the vacancy Mr Lee was appointed to this position in November 1893 hut did not attempt to qualify on a Count of the press of business affairs and the only way under the law that he could be permitted to assume the duties du-ties of the office was by appointment The selection was not made by the board until i had been determined that Mr Lee was still the choice of the majority of his constituents In his report upon the claim of the I Big Cottonwood Power company for lighting the power house at the joint building the county attorney advised the board that the franchise of the county to the power company provides that the county shall receive light free I for the joint building but that there was no mention of free light for the I power house The opinion of the county coun-ty attorney is therefore that the S county should pay for the light used at the power house I The sum of SIS was appropriated to Truant Olficer Miner of the city schools to be used in purchasing shoes for indigent pupils who have been unable I un-able to attend school on account of lack of footwear I < |
