Show TIE CITY COUNCIL THIS VEmGS SESSION LIKELY LIKE-LY TO BE EVENTFUL Mayor Clark Expected t Submit His Message The Police Ordinance I Salary Schedule I Unless all signs fail this evenings session of the city council will be an I eventful one I is expected that Mayor I Clark will have ready for submission I I his tde message transmitting the I annual department reports for last I I year and reciting his recommendations on matters of administration policy A I number of appointments are also expected ex-pected to be sent in I I The interest 1 that nWI center in the j message will be scarcely greater than the anticipated concern over the consideration con-sideration of the new salary schedule I and the passage of the ordinances designed I de-signed to establish the police and fire j departments on a practical and legal i I basis I the new rule permitting a I weeks postponement of a committee report if two members request be i invoked a series of discussions will likely be precipitated The matters I pertaining to the salary schedule and I the police and fire department organizations organi-zations will come up in the form of committee reports thus giving an opportunity op-portunity for a test application of the I harmless looking rule DRAFT OF THE POLICE ORDINANCE ORDIN-ANCE I The committee on municipal laws with City Attorney Hall associated held a meeting last evening to put the j finishing touches on the draft for an ordinance pertaining to the organization I organiza-tion of the police force The salient features of the proposed ordinance were given exclusively in Sundays Tribune Attorney Le Grand Young appeared before the committee but in I what capacity was not divulged In this connection it Is stated that the revised re-vised statutes of 1893 recosnlze the I continuation of the police and fire departments de-partments with a chief at the head of each their control being vested in the mayor and council superseding the late board of police and fire commissioners I commis-sioners The city attorney is also quoted as believing that the Dale I ordinance abolishing the office of police i chief for an interim was invalid in that no ordinace can repeal a statute I SALARY SCHEDULE The finance committEe yesterday completed consideration of the consideraton proposed pro-posed schedule To Councilman Romney was given the safe custody of the precious document for the reason that Chairman Wallace departs this morning on a business trip to Chicago I The result of the committees labors will not be known until the council meets this evening In a general way however I is known that the salaries of practically all of the appointive officers of-ficers and their clerks and assistants will suffer reductions of from 5 to 33 per cent The police and firemen also come in for a cut in pay likewise the city employees of lesser Importance In everal of the departments notably the waterworks large reductions in the working forces will be made I |
