Show UINTAH fSfRVATIN mlL PULL TEXT OF SENATOR RAWLINS RAW-LINS MEASURE t I Commission t Make Allotments and Provisions For the Disposition of Surplus Lands Has Passed the Senate Special Correspondence Washington Jan Following is the full text of Senator Rawlins bill providing for the opening of the Uintah reservation An act for the appointment of a commission com-mission to make allotments of lands in severally to Indians upon the Uin tah Indian reservation In Utah and to obtain the cession to the United States of all lands within said reservation reser-vation not so allotted I Be I enacted by the senate and house of representatives of the United States of America in congress assembled that the president of the United States is hereby authorized and directed to appoint ap-point a commission of three persons who shall with the consent of the Indians In-dians properly residing on the Uintah I Indian reservation In Utah allot in severalty sev-eralty to the said Indians and to such of the Uncompahgre Indians as may not be able to obtain allotments within the Uncompahgre Indian reservation agricultural and grazing lands as follows fol-lows To each head of a family one quarter of a section with an additional quantity of grazing land not exceeding I onequarter of a section to each single I person over 18 years of age oneeighth I I of a section with an additional quantity I of grazing land not exceeding one eighth of a section to each orphan child under 18 years of age oneeighth of a section with an additional quantity quan-tity of grazing land not exceeding one eighth of a section to each person under 18 years of age born prior to such allotment pneelghtnof a section with a like quantity of grazing land provided pro-vided that with the consent of said commission any adult Indian may select a less quantity of land if more desirable desir-able on account of location All necessaiy surveys to enable said commission to complete allotments shall be made under the direction of the general gen-eral land office Sec 2 That said commission shall also obtain by the consent of the majority ma-jority of the adult male Indians properly prop-erly residing upon and having an interest In-terest in the said Ulntah Indian reservation reser-vation the cession to the United States yaton of all the lands within said reservation not allotted or needed for allotment as aforesaid The agreement for such cession ces-sion shall be reported by said commission commis-sion and become operative when rati fed by act of congress and thereupon such ceded lands shall be subject to entry under the general land laws of the United States or to selection by the state of Utah as provided by law to satisfy the land grants made to said state Mineral lands therein shall be I subject to entry under the mineral land laws Sec 3 That said commissioners shall receive S6 per day each and their actual and necessary traveling and incidental expenses while on duty and to be allowed al-lowed a clerk to be selected by them whose compensation shall be fixed b said commissioners subject to the approval ap-proval of the secretary of the interior provided that the cost of executing the provisions of this act shall not exceed the sum of 25000 which sum is hereby appropriated out of any moneys in the I treasury not otherwise appropriated Passed the senate Jan 1 1898 I |
