Show tTE E SHERFFS REPORT A Very Creditable Showing For the Year 1897 EFFICIENCY AND ECONOMY ECONOM APPARENT IN THE CONDUCT OF I TH DEPARTMENT Interesting Figures of the Years Business Proposed1 School Boundary dary Modification and Miscellaneous Miscellane-ous Business Coming Before the County Commissioners at Their Regular Meeting Yesterday Sheriff Lewis yesterday submitted to the board of county commissioners his report for the year 1S97 The report report states that i is pleasing to note the prompt manner in which all business Ianner 1uslness has been done in the department There was no unnecessary delay in serving papers nor in the execution of another an-other duty notwithstanding that the need of more assistants was frequently felt The willingness of all the deputies depu-ties and court bailiffs to perform the required duties has facilitated mater and enabled the sheriff tp do the work of the office up to date But to do this the report continues it has been an almost al-most daily necessity of the staff to perform per-form services after regular hours but the deputies have always promptly and willingly responded to any call made upon them und freely give their vextra time to satisfy all requirements The report continues The serving of all criminal processes such as warrants war-rants and subpoenas bringing prisoners prison-ers into court seeing that witnesses and jurors are in attendance In court at dates of trials etchas involved a j lag amount of work trom which no fee is earned nor other revenue derived de-rived These services were formerly rendered for the most part by prqcinct constables and a charge made against the county for the same I think the county attorney will bear me out In the statement that I have saved the county hundreds of dollars by reason of having done the work referred to and In the manner stated The fees for this work if performed by constables and the county charged with the amounts would aggregate a large sum of extra expense For verification reference ref-erence is made to the dockets of the various va-rious justices of the peace in the city and county Another item to which attention is directed is the great saving in expense to the county effected by reason of the prompt measures adopted by the sher Ifs office in notifying witnesses and jurors excused from attendance at court for the term or during a postponement i post-ponement of the trial for which they I were summoned The aim has been to give prompt and efficient service and at the same time to reduce expenses Another I An-other large saving has been accomplished accom-plished on account of the use of my own team in the serving of processes at a distance and in the transporting of prisoners to and from the Jail and court I SOME INTERESTING FIGURES The years business is stated as fol lows1 Number of processes served 1931 Number of male prisoners taken Into custody 307 Number of female prisoners taken into custody 19 Number of male patients taken to the state insane asylum 20 Number of female phtlents I taken to the femIJ patents lum 21 Number of prisoners tried convicted tred i victed and taken to the state I prison 1 males 29 Number of prisoners tried convicted con-victed and taken to the reform school all males 6 Number of fugitives from justice j retaken all males 6 Value of property reported stolen 6401 00 Value of property recovered and returned to owners 4853 00 Balance unrecovered 1548 00 Fees earned and colected1741 89 SCHOOL BOUNDARY MODIFICATIONS MODIFICA-TIONS Relative to the adjustment of school I district boundary lines a resolution recommended by County School Sup I erintendent Van Cott and County Surveyor Sur-veyor Wilkes was adopted The ieso rso the lution defines the boundaries making written descriptions descrPtons correspond with the official map and also extend Ing the limits of Granite school dis trict No 42 so as to include Little Cottonwood and Butler district No 57 to include Silverton precinct I Superintendent Van Cott made an I argument to convince the board that the boundaries of the two districts I distrcts should be extended to the county line j thus taking in property valued at about f for the benefit of the I school for districts This property is taxed state and county purposes but puroses I has escaped taxation for the district school funds i Commissioners Hall and Rawlins concurred with the superintendent and finally Commissioner Armstrong acquiesced A VACANT JUSTICESHIP Louis Peterson and a large number of other electors residing in numbr Bluf Dale precinct petitioned for the ap pointment of George W Bills to nil a vacancy in the office of justice of the peace I was represented that tha Mr Bills Is the best lIr Bis qualified is a < staunch Democrat and was the wa second sec-ond nominee at our corcus last elec |
