Show A WORTHY INSTITUTION Great Practical Good By the Salvation J Salva-tion Army It Sal Lake City Jan 17Ia the columns col-umns of your valuable paper ofFriday Jan 4 Inotice an appeal for help for a mission on Commercial street This cold set has not only Increased the number of applicants for help on other benevolent societies but has also doubled the applicants for help at the SalvationArmy social department Asa As-a cUet observer of what Is going on I want to say that the social department depart-ment of the Salvation Army in our city Is doing a real practical work I is probably not so well known as others although It has been In operation oper-ation over a year While talking to Captain Braun the officer In charge he told me that no less than 3G families applied for help in one day last week Mere than onehalf of these people received re-ceived heh > of some kind Of course as the Army Is handicapped for finances finan-ces they were by no means able to do what they would have liked to do for them Upon taking me up to their wood yard I saw there what to my mimi seems to be the most practical charity that which helps a man to help himself him-self Among the men who were chopping chop-ping wood ws a school teacher busy earning his dinner at the wood Bile I And looking over the statistics t was surprised that the Army has been able to do the amount of the to good they have with such a small sum ef money The only thins that enables the Army to do this is that all the officers and employees em-ployees give their services free to this great work One very surprising item to me1 was the amount of salary drawn by the officer in charge during the last nine months It did not exceed 2 The reason I write this Is as a citizen I would ike my fellow citizens to assist as-sist this noble cause if in no other way than by patronizing the Army ood pile I found that such men as George A Lowe Judge Bennett George N Scott Walker Bros 1 E Hall and others ara wel known as practical friends of the poor as they help the Army In this branch of its work Some of these gentlemen nade it their business busi-ness to inspect and investigate this r institution and were well satatod with the management of the place I these gentlemfen who are so well known and whose Judgment Is to be relied upcn take an active part in arryJng en such work others should also assist them especially In this time when the need Is so great I am sure this work will stand Investigation I called on them unawares Just to see how the work was carried on and found it all right I trust that the readers of this will give the Army a helping hand as they will be able to put any financial assistance assist-ance given them to god use While wishing success to all who are trying to do good let us stand by a work which we have proved Yours respectfully re-spectfully QUIET OBSERVER |
