Show A GREAT MEETING Democrats Addressed by Messrs GauSs Bill Cherry ITUI XorrcII The Democrats of Park City formally opened the campaign by a monster meeting at the Opera House which was crowded to suffocation The speakers were Charles A Collis of Coalville Democratic candidate for the house of representatives from Summit county Colonel A C Ellis of Salt Lake Judges A G Norrell and A N Cherry Democratic Demo-cratic nominees for judges for the Third judicial district The speakers were escorted from the hotel to the Opera House by a band of music James B Sweeney secretary of the county Democratic committee presided Great enthusiasm was shown and the addresses were punctuated by frequent and loud applause and from the sentiment senti-ment manifested it Is certain the voters realize the important work they have to do viz 10 tend Democratic representaiUvcs and senators to the state legelaiure and so make certain the election of a United States senator who will be for silver without any qualifications and who can stand by and aid Mr Bryan The importance also of electing Mr King to congress seemed to be fully realized and the appeals of the speakers in those directions di-rections met with warm approval CHARLES A COLLIS Mr Collls who was the first speaker said in part that he esteemed it a great honor to meet the audience In pursuance of one great object the betterment bet-terment of the condition of every man woman and child in the United States He was thoroughly in sympathy with the principles of Democracy had always al-ways been a laborer from his youth up and sympathized with the laborer and if he was elected to the legislature would work at all times In the interest of the working people His opinion was that the instrument which has lifted up wage was not political but organized labor He favored the eighthour law and believed that the laborer should have spare time in which to read and study and improve his mind He asked if the silver miners were not home in dustries ana u so why should they not receive support from Utah He was pleased that we were all working I under the common banner of silver The speaker said If he mistook not the temperament of the people they are determined de-termined to make no mistake In sendIng send-ing a senator like Arthur Brown to II I Washington but will elect a legislature whfch will choose a senator who will stand squarely on the free silver Iff to 1 alatform COLONEL ELLIS Colonel Ellis said he came to do his duty as a citizen of Utah and of the United States and notas a paid advocate advo-cate of the mine owners Injuries will be perpetrated this year If we are not successful which it will require centuries t cen-turies to wipe out If the demonetiza tion act of 1S73 was and Is an Injury we have a right to demand that It be righted even if we do profit by Its righting The greatquetion before the people was the monetary system We declare for silver as the cure for the pall spread over the country like the darkness of night What do the Republicans declare for The use of both gold and silver but not for the free coinage of silver without with-out the consent ofother nations The difference between the Democrats and the Republicans is that the former propose pro-pose to right the wrong of 1873 at once while the latter want to gain the consent con-sent of other nations first We claim tapport for correct principles and your good sense will not allow you to be hoodwinked and on November 3 our hopes will be realized The want of confidence from falling prices we seek to correct by increasing the quantity of money of redemption We want to give the people greats opportunities to earn money We offer free coinage as the remedy and silver as the soundest money while the Republicans Re-publicans want to perpetuate present pres-ent system vhich Is unjust to the debtor and we ask you to support the party which comes to the rescue of the American people The nomination of Bryan said the speaker marks an epoch in civilization civiliza-tion and It is the duty ot every citizen of Utah to do all in his or her power to make hs election sure |
