in this state ended tonight to-night made a holiday of his coming 1llh1 Free silver barbecues were held at visited and scores of two of the places lsied offered as sheep oxen and pigs were orered sacrifices to the exponent of 16 to 1 From Decatur early In the morning until Terre Haute a reached tonight Mr Bryan was the recipient of a continuous ovation free from any attempts at-tempts to offset its significance such his as wee made during journey Y through Ohio and his first day of indiana In-diana campaigning The Indiana state committee had arranged ar-ranged the Itinerary well Big towns followed in closesuccession all along ol mining the way Brazil distinctly a and Crawfordsville the community home communi GeneralLew Wallace although al-though smaller w than many of tta places visited were not exceeded in demonstrative appreciation of wildly demonstratve apprelaton the candidate by any of the more populous popu-lous cities ctes REPLIES TO WALLACE Mr at Crawfordsville that It was Crawfordsvie Bryan replied to the charge made by General Wallace that he was an anarchist an-archist At Peru where a great political barbecue bar-becue was held with Senator Teller exCongressman Lafe Pence of Colorado Colo-rado Senator Turpie of Indiana and others as attractions he addressed himself to the local defection in the Democratic ranks and warned those of 1 Demotratt prominence who had left the party U taken back that they might not be tken again Twice during the day he made replies re-plies to speeches delivered by exPresi dent Harrison on his present tour through this tate Three addresses from one stand were delivered by Mr Bryan to big audiences at Lafayette and at Terre Haute he made two before be-fore very large assemblages Altogether Alto-gether he spoke 17 times at Decatur Huntington Rochester Delphi Frankfort Frank-fort Linden La Doga Rochedale Greencastle and the other places mentioned men-tioned The Bryan day demonstration here concluded tonight with two speeches I by the silver champion Sliver clubs and war veterans escorted him from the railroad depot where he arrived at S4ii more than two hours late to f the courthouse The streets were crowded with people all along the route At the courthouse Mr Bryan addressed 20000 people and then proceeded l pro-ceeded to the Terre Haute House i where he spoke to SOOO more THE ADVANCE AGENT At the courthouse after discussing I the money question and using familiar arguments tn favor of the free coinage of silver Mr Bryan ald 1 believe I h claimed by the Republicans Re-publicans that fieir candidate Is the advance agent o prosperity I think LI they have the wrong man I think they were speaking of the chairman t of th national committee not of the candidate The Republican commit teman the chairman of the tmar chairan committee tee is tne advance agent of that peculiar pe-culiar prosperity that comes just before be-fore th election to those who expect to make enough money In the campaign to run them until the next campaign Cheers I you want to know who if ito i-to he prosperous under the Republican administration if the Republicans win I beg you to go and find out who is contributing money to secure the election elec-tion i you can find here the money comes from then you will know that the people who contribute the money expect to be prosperous for four years more and will get back more out uf r i the people than they spent to corrupt the people Great cheering Mr Bryan will leave here early tomorrow C to-morrow morning for his frt days trip I in Illinois In charge of Parks Martin chairman tfieindlana of ihe Indiana Democratic state committee com-mittee the Bryan special train left Fort Wayne at 730 oclock this morn k ing for the second and last days run through Hoosierland The first stop was at Decatur at S r where Mr Bryan spoke 15 min t utS to a large audience The enthusiasm en-thusiasm was very marked At Market a small number beard 2 him and at Huntington he addressed I A a gathering of 2000 for ten minutes L The 100 people at Laketon were mostly E1 r most-ly farmers CAME BY THOUSANDS A political barbecue was In progress at Rcchester when Mr Bryan reached that place People had flocked In by the hundreds trout the neighborhood il around aboutnd the Democratic can c dJdats bad a audience of between S 000 and 10000 g 1 Hon Benjamin F Shiveley Democratic Demo-cratic candidate for governor had just concluded a speech as Mr Bryan appeared ap-peared I I The latter 1 the course of his real re-al read from the platform adopted A1 b y the Indiana Republican convention I in 1890 Concerning I he said t i The Republican platform which I have read in your hearing commended that silver bill a a long yet prudent step toward free coinage and yet when we tell you that free coinage is a good thing our opponents tell us we are lunatics and cranks and idiots Laughter If you would six years ago brag about a long step toward free coinage why dont you brag when I we want to go the whole distance all at once Great cheering YELLOW BADGES SCARCE The only barbecue town on 3arth was the principal Inscription on the posters announcing the Bryan meeting at Peru and a big political barbecue was In progress when the Democratic candidate escorted by a long procession proces-sion reached the grounds A formidable for-midable list of free silver orators had been engaged for the occasion IncludIng Includ-Ing Senator Teller Senator David Tur piE and exCongressman Lafe Pence of Colorado and these made addresses after Mr Bryan had spoken and continued inued his journey toward Terre Haute B H Shiveley Democratic candidate for governor was also present Between 8000 and 10000 people were In attendance and great cheering began be-gan a Mr and ll s Bryan appeared on the platform A noticeable feature of the occasion was the absence of the yellow badges that had been displayed so prominently through Ohio and other parts of Indiana where the Nebraska man spoke There had been defection In the Democratic ranks at Peru and Mn Bryans remarks were mainly to those who had decided to leave the party To them he said in part THE PRODIGALS When you leave the Democratic party in this campaign I want you to leave knowing What I means Do not think that you can leave us this year the reatest fight that Democracy has had for a half a century do not chime that in the presence of the most dangerous dan-gerous enemy you can desert and then come back next year and take a position posi-tion of command You cannot do it my friends iCheerso AH uu wio < leaves the Democratic party in its I great light this year to restore the gov I eminent to those old touudauonb laId j by Jefferson and Jackson need not j expect to come back until he has fully I i atoned for the sin that he commits this year Cheers tTt Bible tells us that i when the prodigal son got tired feeding the hogs and came home his father met I him with open arms and killed the fattest calf for him Well my friends I want you to understand that the I I prodigal son who leaves the Democratic household this year and goes off to feed i the hogs laughter when he comes i back he has got to come with the understanding that he must saw wood a long while before he gets to the table Laughter As one of the speakers in Michigan said when he comes back we will say Kill the prodigal the calf has returned SILVER REPUBLICAN VS GOLD DEMOCRAT I The gold badges were likewise few at I Delphi where Mr Bryan spoke briefly Ito I-to between 5000 and 6000 people He told them to vote for exRepublican James Beadle for congress and said it was better to support by toe ballot i ft silver Republicanilhanone who had f formerly been a Democrat but was I now running on a sold ticket J A crowd numbering in tlienelghbor j j hood of 10000 was addressed briefly by t Air Bryan at Frankfort but it was not to be considered in point of size beside the tremendous audience that had gathered at Lafayette I was intact in-tact three separate gatherings ui in I the courthouse square and Mr Bryan i made three speeches from the same platform one from each side At least i i 25000 is the aggregate of the assemblage j semblage Mr Bryan in his speech had something to say about the position of General Harrison in this campaign He said I I want to ask you to consider for a I moment the position taken by the leading lead-ing advocate of the other side ex President Harrison I think I am justified jus-tified In saying that of all the supporters sup-porters of Mr McKinleys election Mr Harrison is the ablest and most distinguished dis-tinguished He made a speech yesterday I tngishe terday In which he tried to show thai I impossibility of there being a double standard and yet Mr Harrison was I elected president on a platform which denounced Grover Cleveland for trying try-ing to demonetize silver Cheers He tried to show that it was impossible to have two yardsticks and yet he ran four years ago on a platform that declared that the American people from tradition and interest favored bimetallism which means a double standard cheers but worse than that while he opposes the double standard he is trying to run on two platforms this year He said in his speech yesterday The present conditions condi-tions are that we are a bimetallic country and yet the Republican platform plat-form of this year says that we must maintain the present gold standard Cheers I we are a bimetallic country coun-try why did not the platform say that we must maintain the present bimetallic bimetal-lic standard And yet while the Republican Re-publican platform declares that we are at present under a single gold stand Trrt Mr Harrison states that we are under a bimetallic standard Cheers I dns It i mean my friends I mans that having been defeated in this camnaign on the gold standard now as the election approaches they ie trying to get under cover of bimetallism bi-metallism and claim that their platform plat-form is false Cheers WILDLY ENTHUSIASTIC At Linden Mr Bryan spoke to a small gathering Crawfordsville came next and here the nominee encountered one of the most wildly enthusiastic audiences of the day although I numbered about 5000 only The speech of Mr Bryan there was devoted in part to answering the charge made by General Lew Wallace Wal-lace a resident of the town that he Bryan was an anarchist He defended de-fended the Chicago platform from the charge that it was anarchistic L Doga turned out about 1000 cheerers and Rockdale another small crowd The assemblage at Greencastle stretched away off Into the darkness and could not be estimated for that reason I was very enthusiastic I was reserved for Brazil the well known mining center to exceed in demonstrative appreciation of i the Democratic candidate any small city at which he spoke during the day I was 7SO when Mr Bryans train reached that place 1 along the streets to the park where the speaking occurred he was wildly cheered A thousand miners were in the cscorf procession The nearby neighborhood had contributed to the immense throng that gathered to hear him and it is estimated that nearly if not quite 25000 people composed the concourse con-course Mr Bryan brought out no new points in his speech but everything he said was vigorously applauded At 815 the Bryan special pulled out for Terre Haute where I arrived SO minutes late |
