References t < 5 the official conduct of the two present Incumbents In-cumbents who are seeking to be reelected elected are greeted with applause and especially by those who assisted to place them In office The taxpayers have been doing some figuring ad have arrived at the conclusion con-clusion that to much money I being k expended among pet officials and that It is time to call 0 hat Conservative men like Frank Armstrong J S Rawlins Raw-lins and L E Hall are wanted and win be elected A strong point is being sought t b made by the advocates advo-cates of Geddes in this that he has making a gallant fight by singing songs but he is not doing anything for himself among people wlho do not Kow him He stands as well among his acquaintances acquaint-ances a he did the day he was in the Send ward S has done him no good and it is stated that a fast as the same can bo recovered re-covered they ar being called In and new ones issued the latter simply stating stat-ing that all who for the lower house of the Gold and Independent In-dependent Republican tickets made a run yesterday a Democratic headquarters headquar-ters He came in there and began examining ex-amining a ballot which was pasted on me wall and when he reached i own name he found some one had marked it gold Tfis angered the youth and he decided to tear the ballot down t but he didnt He changed his mind then Gulbransen made an objection 1c Gulbranscn told him he must not tearS tear-S anything down which was pasted up t there but Taylor didnt propose to Iftao things that way He changed his irjind when Blakeley Hat x Chairman Lloyd and several others veishing o a average ot 200 apiece hove in sight and told him to pet out or they would throw him out Then it was that Taylors wrath rose i chunks Yoll me f I give you to understand Ill come in when 1 feel like It Yes sir Show me but a passing breeze caught him and he went away t + + + There was n warm time at Schills hall last night the event of the evening being a lu and a simultaneous song p and dance business by several of the candidates The meeting was supposed sup-posed to be held under the auspices J of the Young Mens Silver Republican f clubs aJffhough two or three old men with wHite whCskers got In before they 5 could be prevented J W Eldredge presided and a hard I task he had The first event on the programme wa a speech by George N Lawrence one of the candidates for the legislature legisla-ture on the Republican ticket I I George will onU cnly keep on speaking from now until the campaign closes In the language of Chimmie Fadden Say Touse oughter heard im De I i fel y gets up and coughs a few lines I ouen his troat and den he says says he Felly Citizens Im bere Im de gay wafs running fer de legislate And so on People who heard it say they are going to ask for a key to the I I Address so they can figure i out when ftjey get titae TheJemarks were mystical mys-tical in the extreme George wants everyone to vote straight so he will f not be missed I tA a pathetic af L fair too t There was silver and reelS i reel-S proclty blended a usual Nothing said about McKinlay for that might costa j t cost-a few votes Nothing about Bryan ditto Shearman and Downey two eminent b musicians imported expressly for the ir occasion from the east side of the city twanged a few bars on the banjo and guitar I was really enjoyable this music and the dear people forgot 1 Lawrencee speech as the soft notes wabbled round the room The dear people wanted more and got it I wanted gt and then George Nye explained why everyone every-one should vote he Straight ticket He advocated his own election and every J one elses To reproduce George address b dress would be tiresome So Jet i g pass j Peter Condie then sang The man who says Peter Is not a singer Is off I Tils bass and his tenor also Peter tag I 1 Was President i which 1 AtJsted what he would do on several < Wf J occasions This Is a great song I has 400 verses and during the campaign cam-paign it is understood Peter will sing the entire collection He i going to give It to us on the Installment plan a J were Tonight he will sing seven verses somewhere and continue to morrevv night with seven more and EO on I Peter should he elected this faculty facul-ty of singing will be a great boon to the people Music hath charms to soothe a savage breast so Us said and when Peter has a savage man to arrest he will go out and sing to him till his breast Is soothed properly and when the hardened criminal has relapsed re-lapsed into the softened mood necessary neces-sary tomake handling easy Peter will clap a set of leglrons and handcuffs on him and exultingly declare You are my meat Peter will be the criminals Lorelei He will sit on the fence and sing them Into jail I would be a good thing 1 Peter could get within singing distance of Hermans He would win that 500 easy At the conclusion of Peters songs by the way he sang two more Hon Jack S Daveler spoke Messrs Shearman Downsy John D Spencer and George Lawrence made up a quartette and sang Nelly was aLa a-La I was a good thing Because if Kelly hadnt been a lady there is no telling what she might have suffered 1 I Nelly had been a gentleman her mother wouldnt have recognized her They killed Nelly in the chorus and in the last verse She endured a great deal poor thing Mr Geddes sailed Into The Herald He declared a reporter might be forgiven for-given for making statements because he has to get his information secondhand second-hand and lots of people might deceive him But with editors there was no excuse Editors were liars Geddes declared the editors o The Herald were a lot of prevaricators and intimated that when the time came for seating apart the sheep from the goats that the editors would take the elevator down t the clime where the surface of the lake never congeals sufficiently to permit per-mit the skater to cut circles or the iceman to obtain a supply for next summer Geddes waxed exceedingly wroth and his countenance was not fair to look upon He didnt speak in well modulated modu-lated tones either He just whooped I up He howled and pranced and danced He flashed a recefipt from Clerk Stanton In which it is shown that he has returned 75 in mileage but ddnt mention the balance which he hn in his possession And how he did warp The Herald I came near causing this paper not to g to press He declared It guilty o libel and all that sort of thing Why the man tried It convicted victed it and sentenced It Some timid people thereupon fed In terror They couldnt stand all he w paying It a too tough When he finished everyone choose a partner and to the music o Pe ers er-s ns orchestra they dawnced Geddes shone at the dawnce I is woriih a journey o 20 miles to see Geddes dawnce Condie to Is a whale He can dawnce nearly as well a he sings The whole affair was a corker This event will not be repealed thSs fall The only approach t It will be at Hills park next Tuesday when all the candidates can-didates again assemble to sing and dance 0 < > Say mister said 0 little girl who was one of a group at Fourth East and First South to a Herald man yesterday yester-day Are you for McKinley or for Bryan 1 For Bryan little one was the reply ply why do you ask 01 we are just keeping count We have asked 147 people this morning and all a them ar for Bryan We aint found a single McKlnley fouo sngle man or woman wo-man today Dr Mottle Hughes Cannon will address ad-dress the old soldiers meeting on Tuesday evening next She will be the principal speaker and a good i time Is anticipated The Young Ladies Silver quartette will furnish the music The veterans expect to have a good time tme and invite all who desire to attend 0 0 AH indications point to the triumphant tri-umphant election of e Democratic leg islature From the outlook at present Monson of Cache Nebeker o Rich Nebeker o Tooele and Box Elder Chambers o Summit Smoot and Evans o Utah Snow of Washington and the five members o this county for the upper house are sure of election This will reverse conditions of last winter when George M Cannon used to say thumbs up and thumbs down to the dozen which made up the opposition tote to-te six Democrats The lower l house will be Democratic by a splendid majority 00 The Herald has been asked to answer a question If a voter goes into a booth and marks an X up by the party emblem and then decides to change any vote for one man on the opposition ticket what is the effect The voter would do well to go and get another ballot and not take any such chances There is one way to mark a ballot correctly this year and every vote s marked will b counted Mark an X up by the rooster and let it g at that Do not make any other mark on the ticket at all i 3t1 0 This department Is in receipt of campaign paign songs without end Some are good others bad and others I other positively without merit at ail All campaign songs of a ballad nature should be sent to the chairman of the county committee I commit-tee and all touching upon national issues Is-sues should be sent to Judge Powers marked Personal and private 00 > 4 A 12yearold girl called on the political po-litical editor yesterday She wore d ran button She further said that she was sorry that she was unable to vote this time However if those much older than her would not object to taking tak-ing what she considered good advice she would like to have her first poem published I Is herewith given with pleasure Well have good times In Utah Ill bet a nice new hat II you put a cross up by the roster And let It go at that 4 < 0 The Worklngmens Bryan club held d rousing rally at the Board of Labor hall on Commercial street last night The meeting opened with a song by the Silver Ax quartette entitled The Old Silver Dollar Chairman Willis made a few Chairman Wlis appropriate appro-priate opening remarks in regard to I the consolidation of the labor forces In I favor of William J Bryan Daniel Mangan a Populist and candidate I can-didate for the lower house of the legislature legis-lature was the first speaker The subject sub-ject was a review of the Populist platform I plat-form and Its benefits The next In order was a song by the i quartette The song was composed by Archie Knowlden one of the singers and was a very good one for a boy I is entitled Chop Mc in the Head With a Silver Ax Fisher Harris was next Introduced and Chairman Willis spoke or Mr Harris Har-ris action at the Provo convention when he was proposed as c presidential elector Mr Harris said in part There is scarce a man in Utah If he it i ln favor of harmony and fusion who would not have done what I did Jit the convention What I dd I deserve no praise for I only did what I think was right and would do i again under similar circumstances Continuing he said I is said that explosives when they explode strike at the point of least resistance So if the storm of revolution should break over our heads at the present time it would be the workingmen who would have to bear the brunt of the battle The men who are not prepared In anyway any-way to stand a crisis of any kind Therefore Is it not meet that we should revise the monetary laws so that they would put the laborers In n position to withstand any trials and tribulations And WE are going to revise these laws Around Major McKinleys home in CantOn Can-tOn Ohio stand the human financial bSoodsuckers thteatcnintj their emI em-I i r l d ployeet with discharge if they do not yell for the goldbug leader Of course these men yell for him but that doesnt show the way they are going to vote Flocked around Mr Bryan wherever he goes you will find people who are his friends at heart and are going to vote for him at the polls although they are now shouting for McKinley and sound money men who are forced to do this for fear of discharge I cannot tell the way the United States will go but I think there will be no doubt as to Mr Bryans election Morris Sommer next had the floor He was billed to explain the Australian ballot system After a short speech full of humorous creations he explained ex-plained that system which gives the poorest man a right to vote as his conscience con-science dictates Just Before the Battle by the quartette was next on the programme after which Chairman Willis intro duced Mrs Julia Emery of Colorado She said that although her voice was very feeble she felt it her duty to speak for that great champion of the people William J Bryan She said that the people want to elect him as the next president and they also want to elect a silver legislature for the state Mrs Emery is in favor of wo mans suffrage and equal rights to all In regard to the chances of the nations na-tions rulers she says that she doesnt think much of McKinleys chances this year and attributes the crowds of visitors to Canton to the fact that the people of the United States are endowed with a morbid curiosity She would go herself if she had the chance Mrs Emery says that Colorado will go unanimously for silver George A Whittaker was introduced as the next speaker He has just returned re-turned from Detroit where he went in the interest of the Cigar Makers union of this city of which he is a member He said that wherever he turned in Chicago or Detroit he would see McKinley banners floating about in the breeze but when he had investigated investi-gated the politics of the people he found that a good number were in favor of Bryan and Sewall despite the fact that they wore McKinley buttons He said that he went to a sound money meeting somewhere in the east and found plenty of vacant chairs in the hall A few days afterward he wanted to hear Mr H M Teller When he got to the hall and it was a large onehe could not get standing room That is the McKinley sentiment In the east eastPresident President Berry of the Old Soldiers Bryan club next took the floor and made a few remarks which were enthusiastically en-thusiastically received He spoke mostly of the colored people and the way they are going to vote at the com ing election I is his opinion that they will all go for Bryan He also roundly scored the Rev F O Holman for ting t-ing to unite the church and state He calls him a little immoral pickaninny minister Mr Berry wound up with an invitation to the workingmen to visit the Old Soldiers on next Tuesday evening Mr A V Taylor then made a few remarks and the meeting adjourned until next Thursday evening 000 The GermanAmerican nonpartisan political meeting that was to have I been held in the Germania clubrooms last night was indefinitely postponed A counter attraction in the shape of a German grand ball drew away the crowd < > 00 A large and ultraentausIastlc Democratic
