Show THE BATLE IN OIUO r < Continued from page I > effective work in the campaign than speakers of any other class There are many of them residents of this state on the stump There are likewise like-wise a large number of them who came here from all parts of the west and tendered their services free of charge At headquarters I am told that as a rule the western speakers understand the financial question better than those who come from other sections of the Union I may be interesting to your readers to know that there are mor political meetings held in this city on Sunday than any other day in the week I suppose I the truth were known there were 700 or 800 held here yesterday I was assigned to speak at three I struck me a little strange at first thought and I interposed a mild demurrer Upon inquiry however I learned that there are great numbers of working work-ing people and business men who cannot find the time to attend such meetings on any other day l was reminded also that our cause is one deslgned relieve suffering humanity and that the contest is one for financial emancipation so I waived the demurrer which I had interposed Sam Small well known in Utah and especially at Ogden was on the stump in the city yesterday There were many other preachers of less notoriety who were likewise taking a hand in the political arena I anyone in Utah thinks Governor Altgeld weak in Illinois he is badly mistaken He is a strong man before the people and his election over Tanner the Republican nominee is freely predicted He has certainly cer-tainly entrenched himself strongly in the affections of the working classes He is likewise admired by many people of all classes for the courage of Ills l convictions and the fidelity and intelligence with which he has discharged dis-charged the duties of his office No one with whom I have talked gives any reason why Bryan will not run as strong as Altgeld The class Of people who will support one for the same reason will support the other Bryan is perhaps stronger outside the city while It is thought Altgeld will be a little stronger than Bryan in the city I was at Oreyon thecounty seat of Ogle county in the northeastern part of the state on Saturday evening last county section has always been a hotbed of Republicanism Heretofore there has been about 16 Republicans to 1 Democrat Scores of Republicans who never voted other than their party ticket declared t me that they will not follow their party into the camp of gold monometallism and for the first time will vote the Democratic ticket in the interest of free coinage General Palmer is not considered a factor in the fight Democrats who will not support Bryan will generally vote for McKinley The contest is between Bryan and free silver on the one hand and McKinley and a gold standard on the other irrespective of previous party affiliations There is one thing of a peculiar nature which I have observed on several occasions relating to the discussions which are frequently carried car-ried on in the lobbies of the principal hotels and more especially at the Palmer house A gold and a silver man will begin a discussion A large number of people will soon collect together About the time the silver man corners the goldbug the hotel management will interrupt the argument argu-ment and disperse the crowd While in Utah I had often heard that the banks refused on demand to pay gold to their customers and depositors I had tested our home banks on several occasions and as applied to them I found the assersion was without foundation 1 needed a little money today to keep up current expenses and having a letter of credit from one of our Ogden banks on the Continental National of this city I made an application at the latter for a stated amount in gold I was promptly informed by the president that the bank would not pay gold I inquired for the reason and was in formed that the bankers as a matter of patriotism considered it their duty to pay all the gold they could spare to the government in exchange for greenbacks in order to keep up the gold reserve and prevent another bond issue I asked how long this policy would be pursued by the bank and my question was evaded but I pressed for an answer and was in formed that it would be kept us any way until after the election 2 v c |
