Show SUMMIT COUNTY SAFE The Great Silver District Solid for Bryan A TALK WITH TOM KEARNS HE THINKS CHAMBERS WILL CARRY CAR-RY TUB DISTRICT Favors Holbrook for Congress but Says He Can < Stand King Very Comfortably Observations ut Park City the Home of Several Members of the New York Worlds Silver Trust Park City October 21 1896 I am at the home of the great silver mines of Utah and the home also of three at least of the New York Worlds silver syndicate Park City is in a prosperous condition and the business which necessarily is confined to one street makes the town look crowded from early morning until work is per for the evening I sought the political workers of both parties and have talked with them and with the keen observers In both parties par-ties and if one is to believe the statements state-ments which are made in all earnestness earnest-ness this city is safe for the entire Democratic ticket I found the Republican Repub-lican headquarters locked and no one around who could tell me the name of the chairman or where I could find him In front of the postoffice I found Mr Thomas Kearns one of the staunchest silver men in Utah and one who has contributed liberally to the Bryan campaign fund I asked Mr Kearns how he felt regarding the success suc-cess of the Democratic candidate I feel confident he said that Mr Bryan will be elected How about Mr Kings chances ip I this county I asked Well I hear you are in the county in the Interest of Mr King and you of course know that I am for Mr Holbrook Hol-brook Bift Mr King Is popular and may carry Summit county I am not taking a very active interest in the local lo-cal campaign because I feel the cause of sliver will be safe with either candidate candi-date for congress I would prefer to see Mr Holbrook elected because I 1 belicXe in protection but I can stand Mr King very comfortably How about the senatorial district Well I think Mr Chambers will probably carry the district Still as I have said I am not much interested in local politics but if you Hear of any I McKinley man who will bet on Ne braska send him to me The Republicans have adopted a dif I ferent method of holding their party together in this city than has been used in the past They are making a still hunt from house to house saying in effect that they are for Bryan and I silver but the autonomy of the Repub lican party must be preserved They ale urging upon their party members the necessity of getting the local offices so they may profit thereby and the congressman and legislature in order to secure legislation favoring protection and bounties I find among these hardy miners that these aiguments taken with a grain of salt One said to me that the party who had made the fight and risked their very existence for the cause of silver should get his full support from congressman to constable and that he but voiced the sentiments of many men who in the past had voted the Repub lican ticket The county ticket put up by the Democrats at their late convention is giving satisfaction Especially is this the case among the Miners union who have a number of representatives upon it who are able men and can draw out the full strength of that vote I have not met a McKinley man in this city I doubt very much if 1 percent per-cent of the vote will be cast for the syndicate candidate There are some things I find that are very distasteful to the Republicans of this part of Utah One is that Senator Sen-ator Brown persists in being a factor in Republican politics and will not down Judge Norrell and Judge Cherry have been renewing old acquaintance to day and this evening go to Kamas Tomorrow evening a great meeting Is expected here when Colonel Ellis State Senator Chambers and Judges Norrell and Cherry will speak Park City will surely be found in the Democratic column this year and when that is said it means also Summit county |
