Show OPPOSING scrnmraj COURT DECISIONS DECIS-IONS The Democratic party opposes the decision of the United State supreme court in the income tax case In exactly the same manner that Lincoln said the Republican party opposed the decision de-cision of the supreme court In the Dred Scott case We oppose the Dred Scott decision in a certaln way said Lincoln In his sixth joint debate with Douglas at Quincy upon which I ought perhaps to address you a few words We do not propose that when Dred Scott has been decided to be a slave by the court we as a mob will decide him to be free We do not propose that when any other one or one thousand shall be decided by that court to be slaves we will in any way disturb the right of property thus settled but we nevertheless do oppose that decision as a political rule which shall be binding bind-ing on the voter to vote for nobody who thinks it wrong which shall be binding on the members of congress or the president to favor no measure that does not actually concur with the principles of that dec on We da not propose to be bound by it a a political politi-cal rule in that way because we think it lays the foundation not merely of enlarging and spreading out what we consider an evil but it lays the foundation foun-dation for spreading that evil into the states themselves We propose s resisting re-sisting It as to have it reversed i we can and a new judicial rule established upon this subject The Democrats have good precedent for their dissent from a decision of the supreme court which they believe to be radically wrong They propose to oppose the income tax decision just a Lincoln proposed to oppose the Dred Scott decision |
