1893 by Diane de Morny I I have received during the past week I two letters ot inquiry as to the benefit to be derived from massage and also a I letter asking II Turkish baths are harmful harm-ful Massage which has its derivation In the Greek word massoI knead is an excellent ex-cellent thing for Invalids and for very I thin women I do not think it necessary I for robust healthy women and It is idle folly to suppose or permit ones self to I hug the delusion that it will take tho I place of physical exercise of the various I muscles of the human body you have got p to do the work yourself in massage 1 the operator does it all and the patient 1 freely admit experiences a most de I licous sensation but massage is not inv in-v igorating is soothing and sleepinvit lag and that way tendeth to sloth and indolence and too much flesh I Massage for Thin AVomcii I For veak emaciated nervous excitable I women massage by a trained massueuse by all means if you can afford it The I firstclass masseuse charges usually tJ a treatment If you cannot expend this I amount on such a luxury it is always possible to find for fifty cants an hour a I good clan strong and wholesome young I woman who may be taught In a few moments mo-ments to accommodate her touch to your sensibility and to give you a comforting i and very beneficial rub for great emaciation I emacia-tion and dry feverish skin let the operator 1 op-erator anoint her hands with the massage I mas-sage ointment a receipt for which Is added ad-ded to this paperrubbing it into the skin f which will absorb an astonishing amount i This same massage ointment is excellent I for facial massage I RuMiiiisr Ont AVrinUles iAn i-An woman who is willing to take the time and who has the patience can give I herself facial massage Seat yourself be lon a mirror so you can plainly see I where the lines are most distinct in your I i A fact and just where the relaxed mus I cles of the throat have caused the flabbiness flab-biness so much dreaded Apply a little of the massage ointment to the skin and mooth the lines just as you would the creases out of a bit of ribbon by pres fcing nrmiy but gently in a movement the revpre of the line After the skin has absorbed the ointment pinch it gently with the thumb and forefinger Be care Tul not to be too heroic at first or you may bruise the flesh Five minutes twice a day for three months of this treatment which costs nothing will really produce marvelous results There are a number of appliances to be procured for the obliteration of wrinkles l s some are desirable others utterly worth f 5ss The theory is the same in each case and to women who have no money I io spend in wrinkle removers I say in confidence the above home treatment will prove very satisfactory Turkish baths are luxuries but to the woman who takes < a daily soap scrub not necessities Virtue oC the Electric Bath An electric bath is quite a different mat ter and will repay in its wonderful pain Jaying and invigorating qualities a little economy in srme other direction for the money it costs The electric bath is given at nearly all Turkish bathhouses The patient sits n a bath twothirds full of water into which a generous cup of salt has been thrown and the electricity is uppllel through a sponge from a bataery galvanic preterred The current can be regulated It is an easy matter to learn how to use a battery at home and the entire cost of the treatment will be the money expended for the battery A tencell galvanic anic battery will cost about 15 This r method of applying electricity Is wonderful I wonder-ful in its r < su ts on the face The current cur-rent should be greatly reduced for tho face never stronger in my opinion than thre cells Shocks are blunders always painful often very harmful no matter who is responsible and only a very clumpy clum-py electrician will shock a patient in the bath There is no excuse for a shock which is the result of ignorance or carelessness care-lessness and ruinous to nervous women Electric baths may he taken once a wek with excellent resultc in cases of rheumatism neuralgia internal and ovarian troubles the electric bath is often oft-en a specific and may be given daily until un-til no longer required so often Concerning Concern-ing towels I consider the usual Turkish towel more agreeable and satisfactory to use as it absorbs the moisture quickly but it is not a matter of great importance nless one is apt to feel chilly on getting cut of the bath in whicji case a rougn Turkish or knitted towel used briskly is advisable Salt baths are extremely Invigorating I but do not take the place of the soap arm scrub If you are languid and re ure the tonic of salt water you can add salt to your rinsing water it is beneficial In every way Many women find the addI lion of an aromatic vinegar to the bath 1 ery invigorating I include in this article arti-cle a recipe for such a vinegar which was given me in Europe by a Russian noblewoman noble-woman who told me it was extensively used by tho elegantes of her country Steaming the Face Face steaming has been greatly abuseS in this country of late years As a matter mat-ter of fact face steaming should be most carefully done or it will have often a I most injurious effect upon the eyes I commend in its place the application of hot cloths wrung out in water as hot as I can be borne Renew the hot applications as often as required say for an hour then apply the emollient there arc a number of excellent ones Do not go out for several hours after I I have seen dozens of cases where women wo-men have had their faces steamed and have suffered incredibly from coming out immediately afterwardin one case < rspelas developed in cortfeqtirnce adV ad-V patient was confined to her room for U e weeks Any number of women have applied to me for relief from swollen faces produced by face steaming Let these facts be a warning to you and pray use the ht cloths with proper care The Result of Gross Ignorance hr me time ago I received a letter from btIeif the best known society women in Xew York asking me to come at once to her I found hpr in a most pitiable plight hr face was so swollen she was almost unrecognizable Her eyes were very nearly closed and her appearance was indicative of a very bad case of I blood poisoning I said to her What is the matter what has happened She replied Oh Ive 3el PJen a OlS of I myself please dont tell my husband I wnen no gets back will you but 1 read Jf in the r per that a poultice of oatmeal i applied to the face as hot as possible and kept on for six or eight hours would render the skin fair and beautiful so sister sis-ter and I both made them cutting holes to breathe through at the place where our noses would come and also for the mouth then we each took bromide enough to put us to sleep and tied the poultices or our faces Sister only kept hers on three hours but I kept mine on all night Please do sonething for me and dont tell on n e A treatment of cooling lotions and retirement for a week from the gay world in which she is so deservedly I de-servedly popular brought my charming I friend around all right with an added experience ex-perience and radical views on poultices It is wonderful that womeii will take such risks A Cure For Red Noses Red noses and red patches on the face ore frequently caused by tight corsets and indigestion I have cured any number of cases by loosening corsets and bands and putting the patient on a diet of cer ½ < ds and by depriving her of tea and J fee she is usually so devoted to I JCequently TTY the women who su ter from S 4 1 1 red noses are blondes of sanguine temperament temper-ament highly emotional and subject to acidity of the stomach They should at once put themselves on a diet of cereals and Iruit and drink hot water in place of tea or coffee Women with skin affections af-fections should never eat pork in any form and should particularly avoid greasy food highly spiced or salted meats Let the sufferers for six veeks follow my advice taking plenty of out of door exercise exer-cise walking and driving keeping early hours and the red noses which are quite fatal
