Show REPUBLICANS CAUCUS irVKIVG THE SLATE FOR TiE COX VBXTIOV TODAY Salt Lake County Republicans Arc Xot Greedy But They Like a hole Lot Probable Delegates to the National Convention at Cleveland Cleve-land The Republican League held a caucus cau-cus in the Wasatch block last evening I for the purpose of perfecting the arrangements ar-rangements for the Republican convention i con-vention today and also informally talking over or making a slate for the appointment of delegates to the national I na-tional convention of Republican league clubs ito be held at Cleveland Ohio on June 19 J H Bacon presided and J H Anderson An-derson sat at the secretarys table About 150 Salt Lake city and county delegates to todays convention were present Who Will Officer the Convention The first business was a discussion on who to support for officers in the convention and it was unanimously agreed that J H Bacon was the choice of those present for chairman and J H Anderson for secretary I was thought that James R Jlotherwell of BIngham and Benjamin Benja-min Haywood of the Third precindt of Salt Lake would make a good committee commit-tee on credentials the first named to I act in case only one was allowed from Salt Lake county I For committee on permanent organization organ-ization Joseph Stratton of Murray and John M Zane were the choice of the caucus For members of the committee on resolutions C E Allen Arthur Brown and C C Goodwin were thought to possess eminent qualifications with J I M Tanner and E D R Thompson as additional members in case this county I got five on the committee I Jake Greenewald was the unanimous choice of the caucus for sergenatat anTs Todays Programme The general programme for the day was then discussed and i was finally arranged that the city delegates with I a brass band would meet the country delegates from the north at the I Union Pacific depot at 930 a m and those from the south at the Rio Grande Western depot at 955 and all march to the Grand Opera house where the convention is to beheld be-held by way of Second South to Main street thence south and east to the opera house where the convention will be called to order at 1 oclock The band will then play and the trumpets bray as the delegates toddle away with the lord high executioner The Republican Glee club and the Provo Glee club will be there and will j I add their quota to the general blare II The morning session will be given over to preliminaries and at the afternoon I af-ternoon session exCongressrnan Bar fine and J B Booth of Provo will de I Boo1 Yl I aver orations on me uiuiuae OL tne Republican party to silver and kindred kin-dred topics In the evening W J Borah and exGovernor Prince of New Mexico will hold the boards After the adoption of the above pro gramme a lengthy debate followed on the question whether or no the caucus should select names for the consideration of the convention when it comes to appoint delegates to the National convention of Republican League clubs at Cleveland Ohio Some delegates thought the proper thing to do was to make recommendations recommenda-tions declaring that the men from the country were looking to csvt T I < td fcrnih timber for the Cleveland gathering J H Harris thought Salt Lake should not from politic reasons appear io domineer in this matter It was stated that the delegates to Cleveland would have to pay their own expenses and it would therefore be necessary to select men able and willing to go on those terms Sam B TVesterfield proposed that the caucus select eight men to act as a committee to find out who could be relied on to undertake the mission incase in-case they were selected This motion ultimately prevailed and the following were elected as such committee J G McAllister First precinct S B Westerfield Second precinct William Keyting Third precinct John J Daly Fourth precinct E D R Thompson I Fifth precinct and from the county William White George Betts and Elmer El-mer Hill The commit was instructed instruc-ted to report at noon t day i Utahis entitled to ten delegates to the Cleveland convention and in case any or ail of them are Salt Lake menthe men-the following names have been suggested i sug-gested C C Goodwin James M Anderson An-derson Harry Haynes W H Dickson i John J Daly Arthur Brown C E Allen Al-len W G Van Horn Harry Gushing I i H M Wells Salt Lake county will probably get four or five of the ten and it is a safe guess that they will be selected from the above ten names all of whom are I silver men i |
