Show EFFIE ELLSLER Doris nt the Theatre Lust Evening Even-ing TIic Clarli Cook Benefit Effie Ellsler and her company in Doris was the attraction at the theatre last night and a very meritorious meritori-ous performance was given although it was to only a moderate audience counter attractions having diverted many who would otherwise have been in attendance The ply of Doris is one that combines the moderately sensational with the subdued emotional J and though somewhat uneven in its interest has a number of thrilling passages that almost make ones hair to stand on end On the whole its plot is well maintained and leads to an end that is eminently satisfactory to all concerned iMiss Ellsler the star occupies a position on the American stage that i not easily compared with that of any other I is in the role of pastoral romanticism in such parts a that of Hazel Kirke that she has distinguished dis-tinguished herself and she has played that role E many times and was so long associated with Mr Couldock in that character that it Is hard to separate separ-ate her identity from i In Dons she is well assisted by a good com pany The leading man Mr Drouet Is a good actor and of fine presence He is also the author of the play Mr Weston is also able t act well but does not catch the soft accent of a educated Irishman s well Q he might When It comes to dialects Miss Stanniard has the cockney shup pish tone almost to perfection There will probably be a good attendance at-tendance tonight on the occasion of the lat performance of the company in a piece that has never been played here A Womans Power In this play Miss Ellsler has one of the best opportunities to distinguish herself A an actress in a play that is full of romantic incident and is said to hold the close attention of the audience from beginning to end The Girl I Left Behind Me Noise seems to be one of the chlet ingredients in sensational dramatic work In Massenets new one act opera Navarraise there Is so much artillery firing that the windows in the London Opera house were frequently broken When the opera was given recently at Windsor castle the queen stipulated that drums should be used instead of cannon She did not want her windows brakes and she did not want her heart destroyed In The Girl I Left Behind Me which comes tote to-te Salt Lake theatre May 16 and 17 there is no offensive noise although i is a war drfama The authors take other and more effective ttieians of impressing im-pressing the audience I one wishes to hear how music can be made more terrifying than noise the great third act of this play will furnish abundant evidence There is lots of intense excitement citement but little noise The war chants of the Indians heard in the distance dis-tance are really terrifying and more awful than any amount of earsplitting noise When actual firing is heard I is all In the distance and never becomes be-comes gins this offensive morning The sale of seats b |
