the Selectmen from MaU inK n Contract AVlth Taylor Jensen The Guardians of the Selectmen Se-lectmen Abandon Their Charges Jack Delicacy Is Here Ready to Answer 1 Questions Various flatters Presented I I has becn decided by the county I court that work for the county shall not be let to the lowest and best bid I I der but that it shall be given to the I man who lives nearest the job no matter mat-ter whether he is the lowest or not At least that Is the conclusion one would reach after witnessing the exhibition exhibi-tion yesterday i I will be remembered that recently I the court asked for bids for the Sprink liHf of the roads outside the City limits The first lot which were received were thrown out for reasons which the court did not state The clerk was instructed to readvertise and on Saturday last another an-other lot of offers were received from various parties to do the work The bids were all in form and according to the requirements of the selectmen but for reasons which are only known to the selectmen themselves no award was made at that time Of course there was an effort In the caucus but the protest of Judge McNally who declared that he would take no part in the dark lantern event which had for its purpose the defrauding of the right man somewhat some-what overawed the selectmen and acton ac-ton was postponed until yesterday Herald readers will remember that J H Griffin was the lowest and best bidder bid-der The surprise of all who were In attendance attend-ance yesterday when they heard the resolution res-olution by Geddes which is here given can he imagined by all lovers of fair play in givtng county work Whereas In our judgment work of a public nature should as far as possible where the public good is not jeopardized be given to the residents of th > locality in which paid work is being V > ne and believing that work of a public nature should be distributed among as many resident taxpayers as possible and Whereas The difference between the lowest bids for sprinkling the county streets per advertisement is only 75 cents ana I Whereas As the lowest bidder already has a large contract paid from public i taxation therefore be it I Resolved That on filing a bond in the sum of 1000 the contract be let to Taylor I Tay-lor Jensen The reading of this by the clerk produced pro-duced a silence like that which prevailed pre-vailed in heaven at one time as related re-lated by one of the divine writers I was apparently a case of one was afraid and the other dare not The selectmen looked at each other as much as to say I Why dont you move that the resolution I I he adopted I But no one stirred no one spoke until I McNally tired of the suspense remarked Well what do you want to do with the I matter i Christopherson mustered up courage j j enough to move that the resolution be I adopted and Roberts with what spunk i he had remaining seconded the motion lI carried of course all voting aye with j the exception of the probate judge who voted no I I I I believe that when we advertise forbids j for-bids we should let the contract to the I I I lowest bidder he remarked i Mr Griffin who was on the ground I i after the adjournment said to Roberts I I Do you think that you have treated me fairly in this matter Roberts > didnt know j I Have you acted as you agreed to with i me persisted Griffin Roberts didnt know I again I You told me the other day said Griffin that this contract should go to I the lowest bidder regardless of any favoritism fa-voritism Have you let this contract in accordance with that declaration Well said the statesman from Bing j ham we have done what we thought j I was the best for all concerned Having relieved himself of this little statement the Bingham man fled to the seclusion of his star chamber where Christopherson awaited him and Griffin turned his attention ito Geddes Geddes can crawfish as quick as any man on the face of the wide world He told Griffin that the court had considered consid-ered thematter and that in view of the fact that he got his first contract that of sprinkling the streets of the city by unfair means that it was decided to let this work to other parties Of course he said more than that too He declared I that he Geddes was a tnvmv nnrl tVnf he did not want to see work given out to men who were not deserving Griffin said that the court had better reconsider recon-sider its action whereat the little man from the Third drew himself up to at least four feet six and in a voice pregnant preg-nant with dignity remarked that the present county court would brook no intimidation To this Griffin replied that he did not I propose to intimidate any one he mere ly wanted to see that the rights of the public were protected The present court is investigating the accounts of the old one said Griffin and at the same time is indulging in the same practices prac-tices with the charge were criminal In the court which has retired Geddes thenfled and until a late hour the selectmen did not come from the seclusion se-clusion of their private apartment t The court had a lot of business on hand yesterday Among them were the bills of Geddes and Roberts for the month Roberts walked into the room I where a Herald man was sitting and throwing his account for the month on the table said 1 wish that you would O K that so that I could get the money A glance showed that it was not made out in the form prescribed by law His mileage is bunched No one can tell how where or when he earned the money Roberts is a very foxy man His first bill was all right but the criticism of The Herald was too much for him and he changed his system of bookkeeping at once But this last bill was paid just the same although all al the members of the court had the law on the table in front of them read it and were cognizant of its intent and purpose We do dis on the advice of the county attorney said the member from Farmers Farm-ers ward Roberts account was for 156 and Constitu-tion of Utah the same being a macadam rock claim in Mill Creek canyon the consideration being the mileage used up In going to the place and locating it After passing a few bills granting two
