Show TIlE PAXAMA HAILAVAY The Chance Are Good for a Long Legal Fight New York May 13The announcement announce-ment by the Panama railroad that it will not pro rate with the Pacific Mail Steamship Co after June 1 will probably prob-ably result in a prolonged legal fight The Pacific Mall officials have made a statement in which they < say On March 15 Judges Van Brunt and Parker perpetually enjoined the Panama Railroad company from engaging en-gaging directly or indirectly in carry ing on any services by vessel between the ports of Panama and Acapulco and any other port between these places giving any exclusive privilege to any other party than the Pacific Mail or from placing upon a more favorable I footing in any respect any other party than the Pacific Mail The Panama Railroad company was also enjoined perpetually from executing I exe-cuting any contract with any other company conducting steamship service ser-vice between Panama and Acapulco or any other Immediate port for the I purpose of diverting business to any company other than the Pacific Mails Central American line or from refusing refus-ing to transport over the Panama railroad rail-road at fair and reasonable rates and upon at least as favorable terms and with as favorable facilities as recorded to any other party any merchandise offered by the Pacific al These are the words of the injunction injunc-tion order and In view of them the I practical effect of the Panama roads action is simply to raise through rates not only to the Pacific Mail but to all dther companies even to its own company com-pany I simply means if persisted in a diversion of business sooner or later to other transit routes than that of Panama What the Panama people can mean by thus injuring their own line we do not know I will cost the Panama railroad millions and will simply cost us temporary inconvenience inconven-ience until we can arrange for shipments ship-ments across the country over some other routes at lower rates If continued con-tinued it will be a great boon to the Tehauntepec railroad Director Oppenheim says the Panama Pan-ama railroad will put on a line of steamers between New Orleans and Colon at once This would cut into the business between San Francisco and I Louisiana and Texas points on the Southern Pacific railroad i |
