Show TO LIGHTEN TIE BURDEN Aluminum to He Largely Uscil In Mtliturj Contrivances < lly England Eng-land Germany and France Pittsburg Pa June liA Pitts burg company will supply material for the construction of torpedo boats for foreign countries and other military contrivances in use by England Germany Ger-many and France Captain A E Hunt who secured the contracts has just returned from Europe He said < rVe have contracted to supply aluminum al-uminum for the building of second I class of torpedo boats and for making army canteens and other parts of soldiers sol-diers equipment I is desired by the I European governments to lighten the amount of baggage which each soldier must earn At present his baggage is much heavier than that carried by an American soldier The aluminum torpedo boats will be carried on the large war vessels and will be raised and lowered by machinery The boats are cigar shaped and will be from fifty to one hundred feet in length They are to be constructed entirely from aluminum except their machinery machin-ery Each boat will weigh when ready for sea from 25 to 75 tons which is only onehalf as much as the same sized boats built of steel I would weigh They will be able to navigate both under the water and on the surface Foreign governments are doing everything in their power to lessen the burdens of their infantrymen infantry-men We will make canteens for the soldiers that will weigh but on third as much as the old style canteen Other small parts about an European I soldiers equipment that have heretofore I hereto-fore been made of iron will be replaced re-placed by aluminum in the next few I years The work of reequipment will be pushed rapidly and will result in relieving the infantrymen of many pounds of burden Our contracts are I merely to furnish the foreign military contractors with aluminum alu-minum plates which they will work into such shapes a they desire wore work will keep our plant busy the rest of this year The amount of the contracts is understood un-derstood to be about 500000 They are In the nature of trial orders |
