Show BOILER EXPLODES ONE MAX DEAD AND OTHERS SEVERELY SE-VERELY SCALDED Bij Volumes of Water Ejected on All Sides and the Walls of th Building Cave In Now Orleans Juno 17The Union Cotton Cot-ton Press was the scene of a terrible explosion ex-plosion today which resulted in one man being killed and a dozen wounded Sevei or eight are missing The Union press was one of the largest iu the city and operated by Flangenbush Bort and covered nearly the entire square running from South Peters street to S N V Levee street Its compress compartment opens on Terpsichore street and there are always a dozen or more men around the huge compress com-press when at work At the time of thn explosion the boilers were being tested by W J Hammond of Koscinko Miss representing Kelly Bland Co One of the boilers exploded without warning and in an instant a volume of hot water was ejected on all sides The walls around the boiler room crushed in and those men who escaped the water it is believed were burned in the rums Penrose vas struck by a brick and received a full stream of boiling water in the face H was picked up dead Mr Frankenbush was near Air Penrcso and was struck by bricks and water Up to the present time the following are the known casualties casual-ties Killed Clem B Penrose Injured Preston Dahev shipping clerk scalded H S Snyder shipping clerk scalded John Frankenbush spectator spec-tator badly scalded Henry Offer laborer labor-er badly scalded Laura Jones a negress who was passing at the time was injured by a falling brick Several others whose names could not bo ascertained were also badly scalded Mr Penrose was part owner of the Compress and was a member of the school board The press is demolished The walls of the cotton yard were torn to pieces for nearly a square No bodies were found under the debris Clement Penrose manager of the press was the only person killed though Albert Al-bert S Frankenburg cotton weigher cid Preston Keahey are so badly scalded that they will not recover The cause of the explosion is unknown |
