Show LET US HAVE PEACE V of The announcement in this issue of The Herald that the Rio Grande Western West-ern will make a cut on the freight rates which Jiave recently been established by the Union Pacific V may temporarily please some merchants mer-chants but the change will not be very beneficial to trade in general If they should be adopted by both roads and made permanent of course that would be different But when cutting in that fashion begins it means a contest that keeps rates in an unsettled un-settled condition with the final result of going back to the old figures or to a position above them so that the last state Is worse than the first A rate war among the railroads benefits the public when It beats down passenger prices but freights are another matter and the wholesale whole-sale and jobbing houses much prefer a steady schedule on which they can rely than a falling list which is likely to rise again and which disturbs trade without any permanent good to business either to dealers or purchasers purchas-ers We do not want a freight war When freight rates reach the lowest paying level the railroads do themselves harm and the public no real good by still further cutting them down Let us have peace |
