Show COIL Dlm IDE GOES o Relieved of His Position on the Alert Because of Charges Made By Meade U rtishlngton June 17 Comnmnder r George Ide of tie Alert now at Pana Golge 4 a bas been relieved of his command t J v r b by a cablegram order He will be succeeded by Commander Franklin Hanford at present on duty at the New York navy yard who will take the steamer on July 30 for the Isthmus Isth-mus Commander Ide however will be relieved immediately not being allowed I al-lowed to retain his command until his successor reaches his ship The reason for this summary action is found in charges preferred by Admiral Ad-miral Meade that the commander had threatened him with disrespect The exact nature of these charges were not made public at the navydepart ment but i is known that the inc dent occurred at Panama last spring I Admiral Meade and Assistant Secretary Secre-tary McAdoo while cruising in the arribean sea had touched at Colon ard the two officials crossed the Isthmus to Panama on the railroad Here they met Commander Ide and it was during this meeting the incident occurred that lead the admiral to prefer charges against the commander com-mander The department acted deliberately de-liberately in the matter making a careful care-ful Investigation into the case and finally sending copies of the charges by mail to Commander Ide to afford him an opportunity to defend himself Apparently his answer was not satisfactory satis-factory as his removal from his command com-mand followed Ide will go on waiting wait-ing orders for an indefinite period of I time |
