Show OXFOK1 AND CAMBKllGE They Send a Challenge to Talc and Harvard New York June 17 Charles C Sherrill jr a member of the Yale graduate advisory ad-visory committee was shown the text of the OxfordCombridge challenge to Yale and Harvard cabled to this country by the Asociated Press today He expressed the belief that tho American universities would win if the challenge was accepted He pointed out that this year Yale had Richards in the 100yard and quarter mile events whom they did not have last year and that Harvard could be depended depend-ed upon to win the high jump with Paine While Mr Sheri would have preferred that this international intercollegiate contest had been fixed for July instead of ha the fall he would be glad to see the contest con-test take place and he favored its acceptance ac-ceptance Yale is Vilin Now Haven Conn June 17The full text of the challenge from Oxford and Cambridge to Yale and Harvard was delivered de-livered to Sherman Day the newly elected president of the Yale Athletic association sociation by the Associated Press Oxford Ox-ford and Cambridge having availed themselves them-selves of that means of rapid communication communi-cation President Day received i with evident pleasure and said While it Is Impossible for me to state definitely at this time what will be done I can see no reason why i should not be accepted When the challenge has been received the matter will then come up before our association for official consideration con-sideration We shall then inform our alumni and wH be largely governed by their advice I presume our association will adxise with the Harvard association wI finn but all this depends upon circumstances circum-stances I Is likely that the whole matter mat-ter of dealing with the challenge will be deaIng te Union Track Athletic Club association and in that case 1 will betaken be-taken out of the hands of the undergraduates tken graduates I do not wish to say anything any-thing at this time that will prejudice 1b Yale s sm r in the future b ie t can say this much that Yale Is perfectly will ing to take part in the proposed games Harvard May Refuse Cambridge June 17A reporter of the this afternoon delivered Associated Press tIs aferoon delver ed to Professor Ames chairman of the athletic committee of Harvard college a I copy of the challenge for an internatlon al athletic meeting sent by the Oxford and Cambridge universities of England to Yale and Harvard a5 reprc ntat ves of America Professor Ames sad I cannot give you my opinion a to I what the outcome of this challenge will be In view of the fact that I may be called upon to pass upon it officially and it would not be just the thing for me to make a statement for publlcatlpn until the matter has been considered and disposed dis-posed of by the athletic committee with whom the decision rests None of the other members of the ath letic committee could be found who could be quoted The Associated Press can state however that there is but very little lit-tle chance that Harvard will accept the challenge as i stands and participate in an international meUing with Yale as the only other representative of the American ony representtve can colleges This Is not because of the strained relations between Yale and Harvard Har-vard in football but because Harvards athletic advsers believe she cannot justly accept the challenge and ignore other colleges Igore leges which Harvard men believe are more entitled to consideration than she is Harvard Is very anxious to have some of her men meet the English at an international meeting but as she now holds third place in the intercollegiate association lale being in first piace and the University of Pennsylvania In the second the athletic authorities believe it would b very bad policy to Ignore the University of Pennsylvania and the other minor colleges and accept the present challenge Harvard men believe an international inter-national league of college athletics should only be arranged according to one of three propositions FirstThat the winner of a meeting between be-tween Oxford and Cambridge should meet the winner of a meeting of a like contest between the two leading colleges in athletics ath-letics in America SeconG That the two leading colleges of England should meet two leading colleges col-leges of America ThIrdThat if the Englishmen wish Harvar to be represented in an International Interna-tional meeting Oxford and Cambridge should meet the three leading colleges of America Harvard being thus included or if the challenger so desires a third college col-lege in England might also be represented represent-ed in the team from the other side This feeling is all due to the fact that feelng al Oxford and Cambridge ignored the challenge chal-lenge of the Intercollegiate Athletic association as-sociation The University of Pennsylvania Pennsylva-nia suggested this challenge and feels hurt because it has been retused Other colleges in the association are now much agitated because of the counter coun-ter challenge which has come from the other side which Ignores them entirely Harvard is friendly with the University of Pennsylvania and with other colleges in the association and believes I would be bad policy and an injustice to accept this challenge Harvards answer to the proposition will undoubtedly be transmitted to the Yale authorities within a few days and I the latter have no suggestion to make it will be forwarded to England |
