| Show MILITARY BALL Company L Honors its Esteemed Captain ricHiiuit Affair Cannomille Utah Feb 28On the evening of the 26th Inst occurred one of the most notable social events in the history of Cannonville the occasion I being a grand military ball and romenade given under the auspices I Company L First Infantry in ironer of the fortieth anniversary of the birth of our esteemed captain John M Dunning Dun-ning Our new ball was both testef ully and appropriately decorated for the occasion the stage being beautifully set with the Stars and Stripes stacked rifles bristling bayonets haversacks canteens and other military accoutrements accoutre-ments A lifesized crayon portrait of Pgrtralt our captain hed a conspicuous place on the stage Promptly at 7 p m assembly as-sembly resounded through the hall a signal to form on for the grand march which was led by Mr 11 J Willis and Mrs Willis The grand march was followed by a tastefully arranged pro gramme of dances At 10 p m intermission was announced an-nounced when by special request our esteemed townsman William J Hen derson Esq addressed the boys in blue t for a brief period The gentleman in his remarks alluded to the manly courage responsibilities obligations and duties devolving upon the soldier and dwelt at some length upon the actual necessity of strict obedience and the proper respect under all circumstances circum-stances to be paid our superiors Mr Henderson highly eulogized Captain Dunning for his many sterling qualities asa citizen and especially for his military education and practical training train-ing as a soldier The remarks cf the speaker were listened to with marked attention at the close of which he was most warmly applauded Mr W A Halladar of Company L Bang a song with organ accompaniment accompani-ment which to say the least was indeed in-deed par excellence Our genial floor manager L J Willis then recited the Blacksmiths Story which elicited for this noted elocution 1st unbounded applause THen followed fol-lowed an exhibition drill by he boys in blue under the supervision of Captain Cap-tain Dunning The boys handled their pieces like veterans executing each and every movement in the manual of arms Ith the precision that denotes the wen drilled soldier thereby acquitting ac-quItting themselves with high honors Dancing being the order of the firing line was resumed till 12 oclock at which hour Bugler Talbot sounded taps a signal to disperse the happy and joyous couplps retiring to their bArnes all feeing in nraiap the boys of Company L for their untiring efforts to make the occasion a grand success The ball and promenade wa all that could be desired by the most fastidious and was pronounced by one and al the acme of perfection every participant partici-pant thoroughly enjoying it from commencement com-mencement to the end Great credit is due the committee or arrangements viz First Sergeant Orson Talbot Corporals Henderson Anderson and Powell Musician Tal bot and Privates Mecham Talbot and Powell Company L Third BatalHon First in faiitrv have been honored by the colonel commanding throuerh the recommendation of Captain Dunning by the appointment of Private Neph P Heward to the honorable position of regimental color bearer a position it is hoped Sergeant Heward will fill with credit to himself and with honor and reverence for the flag he will bear |
