Show SALT LAKE BANK FAILS First in Over a Quarter of a Cen turyv BACON ASSIGNS TO ROSS CAUSES WERE PECULIAR TO THAT ONE INSTiTUTION ISTT Liabilities Amount to Three Hun dreil Thousand with Assets Footing Foot-ing Up Over Fonr Hundred Thou sand Mr Bacon Says Thut Every Claim Will Be Paid in Full and That There Will Be a Surplus Bank of Merciir Goes Down with the Banlc of Salt LakeDeed of A Assignment I For the first time in over a quarter of a cenitury a Salt Lake bank yesterday yester-day closed its doors The institution which went to the wall was the Bank of Salt Lake of which James H Bacon is the sole proprietor and president the other officials dais being H l Bacon vicepresi dent F L Holland cashier and B B i Holland assistant cashier The liabilities foot up 300000 while the assets are estimated by Mr Bacon at over 400000 and he states that the creditors will undoubtedly be paid in fullThe The first intimation that the public had of the failure was when the house failed to open at the usual hour yesterday terday morning and the notice that an assignment had been made to Frank L Ross was posted at the entrance a Naturally it caused considerable excitement ex-citement in business circles and many wild and absurd rumors were soon in i circulation I was stated for instance in-stance that one well known individual was out a cool 50000 when as a matter mat-ter of fact that person had a small overdraft When the deed of assignment assign-ment was filed and the true status of affairs was shown the creditors felt considerably relieved and the stir largely subsided PRESIDENT BACONS STATEMENT A Herald reporter found President J H Bacon at his apartments in the afternoon and the banker talked the situation over freely Of course I am chagrined at the failure said Mr Bacon and a concerned chiefly because of the inconvenience incon-venience it is bound to cause our depositors de-positors I will be but temporary however as the bank will be able to pay 100 cents on the dollar The liabilities will amount to about 300000 of which 269000 is in deposits depos-its The assets will exceed 400000 and if we meet with reasonable success in the collections we will not only payout pay-out in full but have a balance left In making the assignment I turned over to Mr Ross a the proprety I own on earth and my wife did not reserve re-serve her dower rights THE IMMEDIATE CAUSE What was the immediate cause of the failure asked the reporter A call from New York o some leans which could not be met The only course left open in order to protect pro-tect the depositors was to make this assignment Was it not possible to obtain the aid of other banks ijt tiding over the crisis Probably but It would have been temporizing and I deemed it best to close the institution inorder to minimize minim-ize the loss How long had you determined upon the course I was decided upon on Monday afternoon af-ternoon when a telegram was received from New York demanding settlements we were unable to make Do you expect to D able to resume business again r h Of course at this time all my thoughts and efforts are directed towards to-wards paying of all claims in full and I with the situation as it is I realize that there Is little sympathy with me BUt when these claims are paid as they certainly will be I shall be able to resume and expect to do so I have had many expressions of sympathy and my friends have as much confidence confi-dence i me a ever THE ASSETS The assets consist chiefly in notes I valuable mining stocks bonds real estate es-tate bank S fixtures etc THE LIABILITIES As before stated the liabilities are chiefly deposits Among those who are in that class is City Treasurer John L May who had upwards of 13000 of city funds on deposit with the bank MrS J A Judd had deposits amounting amount-ing to about the same sum C H Jacobs the wellknown mining man is a creditor to the extent of I 8277 while L M Bacons claim is for 917S70 S The stock exchange kept its account at the Bank of Salt Lake and had 119106 on deposit The Dalton and Lark company is in I I the list of creditors for something like 25000 i The Bank of Salt Lake was firs opened by Mr Bacon in the White S house corner In February 1SSS Te business expanded and in 1892 Mr Bacon I Ba-con changed i tinto the American National Na-tional bsnk The institution wa then moved to the Crane building on Main r street and in February 1S94 Mr Ba I ccn cnanged i Into the American Na I stitution and bought in all the stock Upon becoming the sole proprietor he I changed the name to the Bank of Sal j Lake again I During the panic of 1893 this institution I institu-tion with the others of Salt Lake was unshaken while bankers were failing j in every city in the United States Thut i condition of affairs having been I successfully passed a failure now was not thought of and hence the announcement I an-nouncement made the surprise all the greater iowever tne crisis in the ar fairs of the Bank of Salt Lake was caused by conditions peculiar to that one institution and which do not in any degree Involve any of the other banks which are today in better condition con-dition than they have been for a long tmeTHE THE MERCUR BANK The Mercur bank which was really a branch of the Bank of Salt Lake and started by Mr Bacon also closed its doors yesterday morning and the tQrf oC both institutions will stand on tl1Ocjme footing I is understood that the Htxb iities of the Mercur bank atone footed up 25QOO all in deposits made chiefly by miners and workingmen working-men The city hail 400 on deposit the church S100 and tIle I O 0 F about the same amount Naturally the closing clos-ing of the bank at Mercur created some excitement One depositor made a scene yesterday morning by presenting present-ing his check and when payment was refused by Cashier Felt calling on the people to assist hlmil breaking into the vaults He was flrrestsd S THE ASSIGNEE Frank Ross the assignee Is a well known business man He was former ly of the firm of Gray Ross Wyatt and is i credited with possessing splendid splen-did business ability The statement that he is in some way interested in the bank Is flatly denied by both Mr Bacon and himself The following deed of assignment from James H Bacon Bank of Salt Lake and James H BaponsxBank of < Continued on Pae 3 J S r r SALT LE BANK FAILS Continued
