| Show TALKS WITH STATESMEN STATESMENi i Congressman Clarence f Allen I 1 on the Political Situation HIS VIEWS AS TO SILVER i 1 SPEAKS t RATHER GUARDEDLY OX I THIS IMPORTANT QUESTION Is Off the Platform But in the Party Par-ty Hon A C Cleveland of Ne varta Is for Silver to the Last Dilch Governor McConnell of Ieliho Has n Consultation with Senator Brown and Departs Congressman ClarenceE Allen went direct to his office in the Atlas block after the reception at the Knutsford was over and spent the afternoon between be-tween intermittent attempts to pick up the threads of business which have not had his attention for so long and receiving greetings from friends To The Herald he graciously consented to talk of the allprevailing subject of the times the conventionwhat it will result re-sult in the action of the Utah delegates dele-gates and kindred topics Of the former for-mer he said The experience of the silver men who declined to participate further in the convention after the platform had been adopted was a most trying one I can assure you and it took all the i courage we possessed to take the step we did So far as I am personally concerned con-cerned when I go to a convention on a certain platform Im on that same platform plat-form whea the convention is over That fact furnished the primary motive mo-tive in my case for walking out we were sent to the convention on a silver platform pledged to support nothing but a silver candidate on a silver platform 1 plat-form I wish to say particularly that II I question no mans motive in what i he did nor the wisdom of the method by which he did it but I should have felt recreant to a trust had I remained re-mained in the convention after the adoption of the platform for had I j I stayed I should have felt compelled to I i support the nominee of the convention and having been sent to the convention I on a silver platform I could not have I done so and remained on that platform I was elected to office as a silver man and had to represent that idea To do that I had to oppose the platform that was adopted and I know of no way to oppose a thing except to oppose it I couldnt have done that and have remained in the convention Asked if he considered that the delegates dele-gates who left the convention were out of the Republican party < Ir Allen replied re-plied No we are simply off the platform Nothing can put me out of the Republican Repub-lican party of Utah except the action of the party itself If the party decides de-cides at its convention to declare for gold by endorsing the St Louis platform plat-form and ticket and thereby puts me beyond its pale I suppose I shall have to consider myself out of the party I have little fear that such will be the case however and until it is I shall consider myself as good a Republican as any of them for I still adhere to all the other principles of Republicanism Republican-ism and protection Sn > particular but there can be no effective and lasting protection as long as there is the existing exist-ing relation in the exchange value of gold and silver Mr Allen expressed the hope and belief be-lief that Mr Teller will be a candidate but did not care to discuss the plans of the silver men He hoped that the Democrats would endorse Mr Teller but was likewise unwilling to speak of the likelihood of their doing so or of the work that is being done to bring about such a result Asked if he thought silver could win in the event the Democrats declined to endorse Mr Teller and there were two silver tickets tick-ets in the field he said he thought it was possiDie tie tnougnt two nCKe1S would be the result of the Democrats I refusing to nominate Mr Teller as he did not believe the Populists would support a Democrat even though he were the best kind of a silver man Asked if he would support a Democrat if it became apparent that the Republicans Repub-licans would have to support one as the only means of securing success for silver he said Well Ill never support sup-port McKinley and a gold platform That much I have committed myself to by my action Concerning home matters and the I plan of some of the Republicans who I favor trying to maintain the party organization or-ganization in the state and throw the electoral vote to the silver candidate Mr Allen preferred not to advance Ms ideas Its time to cross that bridge when we get to it said he |
