Show NAVARRE fi I THE SUB URBAN Twenty Thousand People Greet Him with Their Cheers GRIFFMS PRETTY WORK A Beautiful Start and No Complaint Com-plaint Henry of Navarre Proves eU to Be One of the Best Specimens of u Race Horse Seen in Many n Day The Commoner n Good Second Sec-ond and Clifford Third Bclmar Hornpipe Sir Walter and Nanki pooh Not in It NEW YORK June 23 Henry of Na varre is surely himself again for in the fast time of 207 he won the suburban today to-day from some of the best horses in training and did it with consummate ease For some unknown reason he was second choice to Clifford in the betting and from the time they left the post until un-til they had finished there was little doubt of the result I was a grand victory vic-tory in a true run race and August Belmont Bel-mont has another victory added to his already al-ready long string To win the suburban has been one of the aims of every horse owner and to see the race run has apparently parently been the great desire of not only the race going public but of almost every sport Great na hc hppn th ernwl t thc tIk at other days iT always remains for the suburban to bring out TH GREAT MASSES OF PEOPLE I This year was no exception to the rule The day is almost always a line one and the track is almost always good and in that too today followed tradition Standing in the Inner field and looking toward the grand stand it was a eight worth seeing Every seat on the first and second floors of the structure was occupied and up t the roof there was nothing but standing room At last at ten minutes after 4 oclock the bugle I summoned the contestants to the post i and the swarm came out of the place where the layers of odds had congregated congregat-ed to find places a best they could and then the lawns were full and standing room anywhere was at a premium At 445 Belmar passed the grand stand on his way to the start the great crowd receiving re-ceiving him in silence ihen came Hornpipe Horn-pipe and The Commoner and no one seemed to care for them HENRY OF NAVARRE j followed and the crowd cheered and yelled as long as he was in sight Sir Walter got a ripple of applause and Clifford considerable while ankipooh had few iriends I was evident Navarro was the popular favorite although the betting men had calculated that he would be beaten by Clifford At the post Starter Flynn was waiting fO them and after a few words of caution to the jockeys got them in line for the start All were in the best temper except The Commoner who was ugly and fractious i Flynn waited until the western candidate i candi-date had settled down and when he saw I I the colt was ready told them to come Ion and come on they did passing him in almost perfect line I I WAS A BEAUTIFUL START all well placed with no possibility for complaint about the top weights being I kept standing until they were tired The I bunch swept past the grand stand at a good speed with Belmar a shade in r vance or tne others massing rue juage i stand for the first time the furlong being be-ing covered in 12Hr seconds Hornpipe led the way only a neck in front of Sir kl nf J I Walter who was a neck in front of Na varre he 3 head in front of elmar with others close up Then came the furlong I around the lower turn which was covered cover-ed in 1 seconds Hornpipe showing the I way by a length with The Commoner who had moved up from fifth place next I Sir Walter third by a neck and Navarre fourth by a length As they straightened I I out on the back stretch the jociceys began f be-gan to choose their positions and C ayton sent The Ccmmoner up beside Hornpipe i I I I From the top of the grand stand it was I 1 a beautiful sight They passed the three the I i furlong pole in 371 seconds after I start with Hornpipe and The Commoner I side by side a length and ih half in front of Sir Water and Navarre they a length and a half In front of Clifford and Bel mar while a length and a half farther away was Nankipooh I was a double column cavalry chare in perfect alignment align-ment and distance but everybody was looking for the order of i orer TWOS RIGHT INTO LINE I The half mile was reached In 50 in the I same order and they were nearing the turn The seconds slipping i upper seonds were I I away and it was time for the order 103 I I had clicked otf as they reached the live I I furlong pole and the order came Na I varre was the first to respond and as Griffin gave him a bit of bridle he slipped up to the two leaders leaving Sir Water behind Then Clittord left I Belmar and took Navarres place beside the winner of the Brooklyn handicap leaving Beimar ant Nankiyooh to fight Il I out for last place as they had already sot enough of it the pace was too hot But what was the matter with Clifford Taral was already at work upon him trying try-ing to get him L the front where he ought to be but the great son of Bramble seemed to be setting ready to quit and I it was not to 0 wondered at Tney were at th tnreequarter pole at llsl > after the start anu The Commoner iNavarro and Hornpipe were necks apart a full length ana a half in front of him and running easily while lie was working I hard to get away from Sir Walter who was only a half a length behind I AROUND THE UPPER TURN the leaders went on their way to the seven lUrione pole when Hornpipe had I got enough l2 Vi was too much for hirt I and he began to lag Taral saw he had the Lakeland colt beaten and redoubled his efforts to close upon the leaden Around the turn Into the stretch he new and as they passed the mile pole at 141 Grifiln gave Navarre a little more rein and The Commoner was only a head In front while Clifford had got Into third place half a length behind As they straightened out for home Taral began riding as none but Taral can expecting to see The Commoner drop back outclassed out-classed but to his surprise he did not come back Clayton was in second place at the furlong pole for again GrllBn had let out a link and everybody could see that it was all over Clifford could see his old enemy in front of him as he had in other races and strain as he might he could not gain an inch on the beautiful chestnut The Commoner was fair game in any event though Taral and he were dying fast Only a furlong from home and Navarro had half a length the best of It Griffin looked on one side of him at The Commoner and saw him laboring Taral and then on the other side at Clifford with TaralWORKING WORKING LIKE A BEAVER and smiled The race was his beyond a smied question for he could feel his horse going easily under him while his most dangerous danger-ous rival Clifford was blowing like a gramphus his hoofs pounding the dust as if every thump was his last a badly beaten horse A gentle null on the bridle told Navarre he might take things easy a there was no use In getting tired 4 < 0 there were ether races to come In other I days and like a gallant knight there was no necessity of rubbing in a defeat The timers watches stopped at 207 a Navarre passed the post as easily a If he were out for exercise gallop a full length in front of The Commoner on which Clayton was riding his hardest to keep second place from the humbled favorite and did it by a neck with the others far behind Navarn cantered back to the post amid the wild hurrahs af the 20000 people with scarcely a hair turned one of the best specimens of a race horse seen in many a day for It r takes a good horse to win In that time and not slow it lUwas a easy victory I and again Ia Hyland demonstrated his ability as a trainer Grffln rode a tine I
