Show PRETTY POLLS WIT She Beautified Her Little Apartment i at STo Cost at All Just a year ago Polly wits in despair Her bedroom walls were dreadfully shabby and had needed doing over for some time She had been promised that the autumn repairs should include a new wallpaper for her sanctum and I all summer she had hesitated between I masses of pink azaleas climbing on a trellis over a creamy background and bouquets scattered over satinypink and white stripes a la pompadour But the furnace needed repairs likewise like-wise the kitchen range and then there had been a new bathroom put in and f 4 i 4 I tt the bills proved as unexpectedly large as such things invariably do so when they were all paid there was nothing left for Pollys papers When the sad news was broken < to her she climbed lip to her bedroom and looked at the walls dismally But Polly was not a girl to let the grass grow under her feet so she set at once to work to pull out her treasures treas-ures and tee whet she could do about it Among other things she unearthed a roll of posters > whjch she had at onetime one-time begun to collect She had gotten together quite a number and these she tried to arrange against the twaU But this was not satisfactory either I couldnt stand linking powder or the dates for the races in letters three inches long staringme in the face every morning said Polly so that wouldnt do Finally a bright idea struck her She remembered an old story by Mrs Harriet Har-riet Beecher Stone in which a girl papers pa-pers the dining room with Pompeian figures aranged in panels There were so many windows and doors in Pollys room that the walls ere naturally divided di-vided into panels < Moreover the paper pa-per lent itself readily to the scheme the pattern x being very subdued in color in tones of cream and tan picked out with gilt Cartridge paper would have been better but after all this is not half bad said Polly and set to work forthwith forth-with By the aid of a sharp pair of scissors she soon had a number of figures fig-ures ready to apply So she arranged and rearranged fastening fas-tening the figures firmly into position by means of pins and thumb tacks until she was entirely satisfied with the effect then carefully pasted the figures into place Over the dainty dressing table dances as pretty Geisha girls from a Dalys theatre poster of a year or two back In the narrow panel ewer a door run the spirited horses of a race meeting meet-ing announcement For still another and broader panel are arranged covers cut from various magazines and all this costing as Polly says not a sou marquis whatever that may be And you ought to see Pollys bedroom now noOf Of course during the year she has made several additions A certain lovely poster of Scribners Magazine which wag too beautiful to cut has I been simply framed and two others of more recent date representing respectively re-spectively a cavalry and naval officer and framed in a narrow line of blackwood black-wood Her most recent acquisition act ually in place is tins seasons poster announcing Miss Julia Arthurs appearance ap-pearance as A Lady of Quality This is more effective representing a beautiful beau-tiful head wreathed with vine leaves standing out from 9 background of pale gold It has been framed in gilded gild-ed wood and skyed because of its heroic proportions over the mirror surmounting the mantlepiece Any suggestions as to doing over the room this season have been received with the silent contempt they deserved < E I T |
