Show I PWPIMIM ii Hoar AsKed Immediate Adoption His Resolution BUT MR DAVJSOBdECTEp T 4 > IILIthd s AHE > Ain > OUGHT TO BE IDEPEPJNT Hoar Kesolution Concedes Their Right to Form n Government Senator Allen HhstLittle Faith I the Alger Belief Commission Need of r a Thorough Investigation t 1 WashinJan1Inthe senate today MrSfoar introduced the follow 3 ing resolution J I ResolveTfr That thejLpeople of the Phllippiriejjlslands of ftght ought to be free and Independent that they are absolved from any allegiance to the Spanish crown and that all he political politi-cal connection between them and Spain e is and ought to be totally dissolved I and they have theref re full power to do all acts and things which independent independ-ent states may of right do that it is their right to institute a new government govern-ment for themselves laying a foundation founda-tion on such principles and organizing I its powers in such form as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness and that with these rights the people of the United States do not propose to interfere I should like to have i adopted immediately im-mediately said Mr Hoar I object said Mr Davis of Minnesota Minne-sota and the resolution went over The resolution of Mr Allen for the appointment of a committee of five senators to investigate the conduct of the late war was laid before the senate sen-ate and Mr Alien took the floor Mr Allen said he had no desire to embarrass the president but so many complaints had been matte by the press and individuals of the conduct the war that he thought it time for a rigid and impartial investigation of the war to be made He had he said no confidence con-fidence in the Algcr relief commission commis-sion which was now conducting an investigation in-vestigation of the war He criticised the sending of troops to Chickamauga where they were faced bysickness and death He intimated that the ticons of the west were sent to Chickamauga panies for the benefit of transportation com He declared that there had been gross irle ularies in the handling of the commissary and other supplies He I II said it had been charged that the supplies sup-plies were in many cases unfit for use and he v as satisfied the charges were I true I the troops had been furnished embalmed beef the people and the I world had a right to know it Interrupting Mr Allen Mr Spooner Wis criticised him for his anticina I tion of an unfair and partial report from the commission and suggested that he might better wait until the report re-port was presented before he attacked itAt At this point a message was received from the house announcing the adoo tion of resolutions on the death of Representative Rep-resentative Dingley Mr Hale requested I request-ed that the resolution be laid before the senate and read Mr Hale then offered offer-ed resolutions expressive of the deep I Sensibility with which the senate had learned of the death of Representative directed the appointment Dingle and direted arointment of a committee of senators to accompany accom-pany the remains to Maine Mr Hale also delivered a feeling eulogy or Mr I r Dingley The senate then adjourned |
