Show iJEATHrOF11NGLEY1 G I Expressions of Profound Sorrow at the National Capital HOUSE TAKES + j ACTION STATE TTTNEKAIr TO BSH3 LD ON KOHDAT 1 Services Will Take lace I the Hall of Kepressntatives The President Sends a Letter of Condolence toM to-M Dingley Desk In the House HeavilyDraped HeviyDrpedt Washington Jan 14 Profound sorrow sor-row was manifested today in every walk of public life in the announcement that Nelson Dingley of Maine had passed away At the late home of Mr Dingley the Hamilton hotel there were many evidences o that deep personal esteem in which he was held Mes esem sag < 1 of condolence came from every quarter of the country and to these were added the personal condolences of cabinet officers senators supreme judges and members of the house Secretary Alger and Wilson were among the earliest callers and following follow-ing them were the bishop of Washington Washing-ton Right Rev Dr Satterlee Senators Hale Burrows Fairbanks Representatives Representa-tives Henderson Cannon Dockery and indeed nearly every man in congress with whom Mr Dingley had been associated sociated during his long and notable service rce The callers left their cards a the family were too deeply bowed down the with grief to receive in person many tributes of respect Ir Ding ley was prostrated with the chock and with the tension of many days of constant con-stant vigil at her husbands bedside But she was reported to be bearing up bravply and no serious apprehension d to her condition was expressed as cndition At the house of representatives the death of Mr Dingley came as a personal per-sonal hprpavprnenit to the many mem bets with whom he had long been associated as-sociated The desk he had occupied a floor leader of the house in the center of the Republican side of the chamber was heavily draped in crepe while onj top was a profusion of orchids sweet flag coral sprays and smilax As the members came on the floor they joined in groups and in hushed tones spoke not only of the personal loss but also of the loss to the country and the house of representatives in particular in the passing of this noble leader at a time when his genius and talents were of incalculable service to his country There was but one voice from both sides of the chamber In the expression of grief In view of the long and distinguished services of the late Representative Dingley the funeral ceremony will be in the hall of the house and will be in the nature of a state funeral I will be held at 12 oclock noon on Monday CONDOLENCE FROM MKINLEY i Among the letters of condolence was one from President McKinley I was a follows Dear Mrs Dingley have this moment mo-ment learned of the death of your distinguished dis-tinguished husband and write to express tnruishe husbid I press the profound sorrow which both Mrs McKinley and myself feel for you in your grat affliction We mourn with you in this overwhelming over-whelming loss which will be deeply feSi by the whole country From my long and intimate association with him it corce3 to me as a persona bereavement I bereave-ment A greatconsolation in this sa hour is a recollection of Mr Dingleys I exalted charaeteV his domestic virtues I his quiet useful dlcrtlnguished life and longcontinued and faithful service in faahalf of his fellow citizens who will I always cherish his memory as that of a great statesman and true patriot With sympathy believe me always sincerely WILLIAM MKINLEY ACTION OF THE HOUSE The house of repreccotativep assembled assem-bled today under circumstances cf deep and universal sx row in the death of I Representative Nelson A Dingley cf Maine As Speaker Reed entered the chamber cham-ber a hush fell upon the members whoa who-a moment later rose and with bowed heads listened td the eloquent tribute from the chaplain Rev Dr Gouden Mr Boutelle the seniOr member of the Maine delegation offered and the hcusa adopted a series of resolutions providing for funeral services in the house on Monday ana lor a committee commit-tee of nine members to accompany the remains to Maine The resolutions cqrcludcJ with a motion to adjourn Tne speaker announced the following follow-ing committee under the resolutions Messrs Boutelle Payne Dolliver Taw ney Evans Hilborn Clarke N H Bale Dcckery Bell and McCleilan At 1205 p m as a mark of rCpt the house adjourned until Monday when the funeral service will occur |
