Show JCRflANrRIVERRECORfl r I i V I Republicans Proposed Giving the Water to Lamson 4 I ACTION IN THE COUNCIL + ATTEMPT TO ROB CITY OF ITS RIGHTS t Republican Member Introduced 0 Jlesolution Giving Lamson the Use of the Water and it Was Supported Sup-ported By Buckle Defeated By Dsmocratic Members t HannaJtes have been making a great deal of fuss over the water from Utah lake which it claims has been lost or a great portion thereof through the negligence of a Democratic council Asa As-a matter of fact the question will have to be settled in the courts and theru is very little politics in the case at this time Time was when the Republicans of the city did not fear that Jilr Lamson who is the head of the company whleh is using the water would secure any thing belonging t the city and Republican Repub-lican members of the council which went out of power nearly two years ago actually proposed giving him the right to use the citys share I was during the last hours of the old Republican council which left office of-fice covered with odium and amid tho execrations of the people regardless of politics that Councilman Stewart a Republican arose in his place and offered of-fered a resolution giving to Lamson the right to use the citys portion of the water of Utah lake the conditions being that Lamson was to give a bond in the sum of 55000 for keeping the gates in repair and return the water tu the city canal below the point where it was used undiminished in quantity This was on the 15th December 1897 This resolution was referred to the committees on irrigation and municipal laws and the city attorney and city engineer t These gentlemen made a trip to the place and looked over the ground When they returned an informal meting met-ing was held at which the city attorney related that there was danger In changing chang-ing the course of the water a suggested sug-gested because the city might forfeit some rights The Democratic members supported him although Stewart and Buckle who were present urged that the grant be made the latter being son especially solicitous in behalf of Lam sonBut the Democrats stood firm and the report was never sent to the council but died in the committee Lamson learning of the condition of affairs made a filing on onesixth of the water and notified the city council late in December Those who are familiar with the conditions con-ditions a they then existed declare that i was the purpose of the Republican Repub-lican members of the committee to railroad rail-road the scheme through during the last das of the session and that the plan was frustrated only by the vigilance vigil-ance of the Democrats But now when Lamson has filed on the water and stands ready to defend alleged rights in a sit at law the Republicans come in and boldly charge the Democrats with a responsibility for which they are in no wise to blame There is n polities in the matter whatever and the cry of neglect which has been raised will doubtless cease ha rsed wi doubtess ceae when the Republicans are confronted with their own attempt to give tho water away when they held the power of the city government |
