| Show V A PROPER DENIAL I Some of our contemporaries are finding fault with a Texan judge who refused naturalization nat-uralization to a Bohemian the other day The applicant was intelligent and educated and had resided in this country for several years but he was an avowed socialist and when questioned in court declared that ho believed jn and advocated the doctrines of socialism The judge thereupon declined to grant him citizenship papers saying that a man who held socialistic principles was unfit for American citizenship Instead of being censured for this ruling the judge is deserving of commendation and applause It would bo well for tbe country if more judges were like him Only those who give reasonable promise of becoming good citizens citi-zens should be admitted to the enjoyment of the gifts advantages and privileges which accompany citizenship If a foreigner for-eigner declares that he is not in sympathy with the laws and institutions of the country coun-try thathedoes notbelievein the principles upon which the government is founded and on which it is conducted If ho shall confess con-fess that ha is disposed to change things and to attempt to revolutionize the system of government not only should he be denied de-nied citizenship but denied also the privilege I privi-lege of landing on American soil A Socialist as the word has come to be understood under-stood cannot be a good citizen of any advanced ad-vanced nation He must be opposed to every form of government which in the least degree interferes with or imposes obligations ob-ligations upon him as an individual He is an enemy to law and order an opponent of society rrhich does not agree with him in his leveling ideas a hater of GOD and a breeder of disturbance Courts will do well to hedge him out whenever possible |
