| Show S A Statement by Secretary Tracy I I WASHINGTON Oct 23It is improbable any serious results will follow the Balti more incident at Valparaiso It is probable II prob-able this government will await the outcome I out-come of the legal inquiry now in progress i I in Chili before making any move and tnat in the meantime precautions will bo ncI i nc-I cepted to avoid any further collisions I j j Secretary Tracy and General Foster had a I I conference with the President this afternoon i after-noon and at its close Secretary Tracy I dictated the following aa the latest official of-ficial information on the subject I From a dispatch received from Captain Schley it appears he hat made a careful investigation which showed petty officer Charles Reagan while riding in a streetcar street-car was assailed dragged from the cur and shot Apprentice Talbot Coalheaver Therson Cool heaver Turnbull and a potty officer Hamilton were wounded in many places principally stabs in the back Coal heaver Painter and Landsman Davidson were dangerously injured by assaults with clubs stones and knives Many other men were seriously injured by assaults Thirtyfive seamen were arrested by tho police authorities and detained Surgeons on the Baltimore are unanimously of the I opinion that some of the wounds were inflicted in-flicted by bayonets thus showing clears the participation of the police The American I Ameri-can sailors were without arms aud defenseless defense-less they were sober and innocent of any I misbehavior that in several instances sailors of the Chilian fleet rendered assistance assist-ance to our sailors and that in some instances in-stances the police protected them Secretary Secre-tary Tracy said through some difficulty with the cipher used in the dispatch they were yet unable to ascertain what disposition disposi-tion had been made of the men arrested |
