Show WILL TRY AND BREAK IT The United Effort to Be Made by the Mine Operators Birmingham Ala May 7During the present week a united effort to break the strike will be made by the mine operators in this city This will be done by taking back and putting to work at the reduced scale refused by miners negroes who went last summer sum-mer to work in Kansas mines Upwards Up-wards of a hundred negro miners have been brought to Blue Creed and will arrive today These negroes will work under a heavy guard of deputy sheriffs Among the striking miners a large amount of suffering exists and some are actually starving for want of sustenance tenance A circular letter of appeals has been made by the executive council coun-cil to all the trades unions of Alabama for help and many of them are begging for bread Several south Alabama towns are in darkness for want of coal to operate electric plants Two of the Sloss Iron and Steel companys blast furnaces have been blown out and several more are likely to be banked this week This week will largely determine which way the result will go |
