Show The Ninth Ward The meetinghouse of the Ninth ward was well filled with an attentive and intelligent audience who participated in the ratification exercises with marked enthusiasm Helds band discoursed dis-coursed stirring music at Intervals during the evening and gave the proceeding a decided patriotic patri-otic flavor Mr William Fuller was the first speaker He forcibly and eloquently stated his reasons for preferring t be a member of the Peoples party und his statements were relished by his hearers He made one point very clear t the meeting and that was in regard t the question of taxation taxa-tion The People no said had carried on successfully suc-cessfully the government of Salt Lake city without running into debt I was true they had been frugal and economical they had been staid and steady they had not imbibed the extravagant ex-travagant ideas which characterized people of other cities they had not taken npon themselves a burdensome debt to hand down t posterity I I but were content to collect a tax of onehalf of 1 per cent Should the opposition seize the reins I of government after the 10th the outlook seemed 1 drear and dim for poo working people for the Liberals would undoubtedly boom the taxes t the extent of making a man of medium income unable to pay them the rate of taxation I I would mount np to 10 or 12 per cent Mr Fuller n t f was listened to with wrapt attention and when he of resumed applause his seat received a deafening round A counle of humorous readings by J E Evans increased the good humor of the audience Mr Joshua Midgely followed and after stating stat-ing that he was not a gifted public syeaker he gfd promised that if elected he would aid in carry Ing out the principles of the Peoples party Granville Gillett was called for and in his dry earnest manner related an anecdote which created cre-ated considerable laughter He said the old party of the People wag good enough for him and he hoped they would be perpetuated in the government of the city |
